    GENERATION X

I could really use some help for the next couple of days for some data if at all possible. The thread might end up turning into some other discussion which is fine, but in the meantime, I have a couple of requests.....

If you're old enough and you can remember all of the things pertaining to a culture here.

Im talking about Generation X... The same one Pepsi made a commercial and deemed it the pepsi generation.

Can you guys remember the negative connotations attached to this generation?

Can you also remember and list some of the positives attached to this generation?

    Re: GENERATION X

Negatives: labeled as the "slacker" generation.

Positives: More informed than the generations prior to them and less apathetic than the ones after.

Oh, and I missed the cut off of being labeled a "Gen-Xer" (born in the 70s) by 23 days. I'm three weeks too young.

Technically, you're right. But that's just too broad of a spectrum to be one generation IMO. The average person born in 1961 has a completely different worldview than that average person born in 1981. In recent years they label it as early 60s - early 80s, but during the 90s (when they really started marketing towards GenX) it was strictly aimed towards teens and early twenty-somethings.

I absolutely agree with you, so finding out the years were kind of a shocker to me. Back then I felt like those in the next age group from me weren't labeled as such.

I have another question.... do you feel as though the baby boomers dropped the ball to the next generation?

            Re: GENERATION X

I know the definitions of Gen X but I'd say true Gen X were people who were in high school any time in 1984-1998.

The slacker label is definitely on this group of people but that could be the only real negative I can find. This was a group of people who brought rap music into the mainstream, killed hair metal, and celebrated the supernova that was grunge. Nintendo staked heir first claim in America with this group of people. I think this was the first generation that was heavily marketed to by major companies.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

I think you're a little late in your GEN X years.....just a few off, but it moves you too far into things that didn't really define GEN X'ers.
Grunge wasn't really GEN X as much as punk and new wave were(just ask Billy Idol....his band before going solo was NAMED GEN X!)
We are widely known as the generation that directly followed the baby boomers, which would put us a little earlier in the 80's.
Nitpicking, but as someone born in 1965..."I" basically started the GEN X generation.

Its insane really because naming a whole generation a letter basically used as an unknown, I think alot of baby boomers dropped the ball

I fly the Gen X flag then...

                    --Graduated high school in 1985
--Loved the Seattle music scene in the early 90's
--I'm 46 and gainfully employed, but still really do not know what I want to do for a career. If you gave me a free four-year ride to university right now, I would have NO idea what I would want to major in.

That doesn't make me a slacker though. Every generation since the Greatest Generation has slackers.

I was born in 1980 and graduated HS in 1998. I never really felt totally associated with Gen X'ers, but nor was I a Millennial or whatever the 2000's kids were called.

People born around the edges of the categories tend to show a mix of behaviors/attitudes associated with both and don't strongly identify with either.

The most interesting thing I read regarding generational theory was from Strauss & Howe, aptly named Generations. Here's the wiki article for their theory. It's not solely about Generation X, but well worth a read if you're into this kind of stuff.

I agree with this...was too young to totally be Gen X, but too old to be a 2000's kid....I think I have a bit of both
