My bank actually reached out to me and told me they'd be sending me a new card. Couldn't say whether or not I was actually affected but they're being proactive.

I really like how Target decides to wait until the last week before Christmas before they release this info. Because you know sales would drop close to 0 if they decided to release the info when they found out when it happened.

And don't tell me a data breach lasted for 3 weeks before someone realized what was going on.

They notified someone as soon as they figured it out. They had to get all the information before they release anything to the public especially with something like this.

I went to Target last night and it seemed more pack there then it usually was when I worked there last year. I guess people were like, well, at least I can still save 5%.

lol really? Is that why when other companies get hacked, they release the info right away? Target withheld the info so that shoppers wouldn't panic about shopping at Target.

You look at all the companies that have been hacked. Sony, Barnes, etc... They all released the info within a day or 2 of their attacks.

And why would they need to get information first before releasing to the public that their financial information has been compromised? That makes no sense.

Let's hold off on telling our customers that someone may be using their credit cards illegally so they can buy more things before the owner finds out!

If this happened in May, I'm 100% sure Target would have released this info the day they found out.

I just don't see the big deal. If your credit card info gets stolen then you get a new card and aren't responsible for the charges. The likely hood of identity theft is very rare with this case since they didn't get DOB, SSN, etc.

2 of my co-workers got banged with fraudulent charges a week after they shopped at Target during that period. One was a debit card the other a credit card. One was used at a liquor store and the other was used at a food store, Burger King, and Victoria Secret.

Target is offering 10% discount on December 21-22, apparently.

This is going to be unpleasant.

I'm pretty sure I shopped during this time, but can't remember. I always use my CC though, so not too worried. I did get a letter from Amex about some potential security issue, but it didn't really have any info to say what it was from. Maybe it had to do with this, but who knows.

I really want to know how they did this, but for obvious security reasons, we won't ever know. I wonder if they used the CC machine to upload something or if they were somehow able to get into their servers.

                            They hacked into the servers.

They were either a very, very good hacker or an excellent BS'er. Most likely they were both. They could have either hacked in, or sent emails to Target employees and convince them to click on a link from that email and enter some information on whatever site they were taken to. If they do that, boom, you have their info and can take over their machine.
