Are Sports Video Games On Their Way Out?

I assume many, if not all of us here at OS, have a love for sports video games. Sports are a large part of who we are, and how we spend our free time (and for many of us, an area in which we work). I know for a fact that sports video games are the only tie many of you have to video games, and for others, it remains an integral part of the gaming experience. Unfortunately, we've seen our options dwindle to the point where there are relatively few sports still being represented, and even fewer options in terms of games per sport.

When I finished reading Owen Good's article on the year of sports video games, it got me wondering: is the genre on its way out?

Of course, this is a devastating thought for me. I'm a gamer first, but the sports genre is right up there with my favorites, and it's probably the genre I log the most time with (or at least very close). But with the Madden contract up next year, NBA Live struggling really badly, and Tiger Woods on "hiatus", I think there's definitely reason to worry. There's no guarantee that the NFL picks up any offers and if Madden goes down with the NCAA series, there's reason to believe that EA wouldn't bother holding a team together for a golf game that isn't raking in money. NBA 2K is doing so well that I'd imagine they continue making games, but what happens if that series ever goes down? I don't think any of us have too much trust in Live right now, especially with their sales numbers.

Which really just leaves us with hockey and football (soccer), two sports that are massively popular outside of the United States. It's great that UFC is on its way in - and looks great, at that - and that indie titles like Powerstar Golf are doing very well. I've made an argument that as long as the industry holds up, I don't see us being without a college sports game for much longer. But what if the industry doesn't hold up?

I don't know, just a thought. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's seeming more and more possible. I'd love to hear a counter argument to the whole thing, because I really want to feel differently. What does OS think?

OS thinks you left out baseball.

For a single system game....The Show still sells pretty well and is a "system seller".

While it might be on the decline(I'm looking at you greedy exclusive deals for accelerating this).....I don't think it's on it's way out.
Sports is still a huge industry in this country and if a void is created in the gaming section of it......by nature something/someone will fill in IMO.

Yeah, I certainly didn't leave The Show out of my thought process (by far my favorite sports game), but I didn't mention it anywhere in my post.

I agree that exclusive deals are terrible. It creates this terrible situation of if/when the game fails, we as consumers and fans are left with nothing. Hopefully that never happens with our beloved baseball, Knight.

        Absolutely....

I really hope sports gaming makes a rebound if sports leagues get a little more receptive to allowing licensing to be more reasonable.

Man....there were 5 or 6 baseball games alone 10 years ago.

As long as online works, sports games will never be on their way out. I know too many people personally who only own consoles just to play in Madden or NBA 2K leagues. All other games they can careless about and only buy those games for their kids.

Absolutely. I'm surprised more companies haven't taken Sony's route and developed a game specifically for their console ala The Show. Games like that sell systems, and honestly, I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't retaliated.

In a way they did though, just a different genre.

              Xbox had Halo.

Then Sony made Gods of War.

Personally, I think there will always be sports games, however I believe that single player experiences are on the way out.

That includes single player modes for sports games and the option for couch co-op's for games like shooters. It's a shame because most of us grew up playing those types of games and although online is great the option to play with someone who's sitting beside you will always be the best gaming experience (imo).

Sports are such a huge part of our society that I really can't see sports games going completely away.

Based on a poll on this site several months ago, seems like there's still alot of people who play offline much more than online(and probably a few who are like me, that play exclusively offline, especially on games where you don't know anyone in real life who plays it much(if at all)).

Sports games won't end, they're up there in most popular titles.
                    "2013" games for example:
                    NHL 13-1.05M
                    NBA 2K13-5.2M
                    Madden 13-5.73M
MLB 13-1.2M(combining The Show and 2K)

So having annual releases that can get so many people per year, don't see why they'd stop. The one thing about sports titles that should change though, is being annual titles. From a fans perspective, it'd be great to see(since it does seem like developers are rushed too much, as it seems like they only have several months a year to work on each title, since a month or so after a release, they're working on patches and stuff for the recently released game and then they have until a month or so before next years release to finish up, so it's not even a full year window they have to work on the games)

But from business perspective, it won't work. A company would rather get 1.2M sales each year for 2 years, than 2M sales one year and maybe 300k sales another year(since most of those 300k are prob just waiting for price to really drop a year later when no new title is released)

Will they ever be on the way out? Probably not with how popular sports are. However the quality of the gameplay is on the way out, too much focus on online and extra pointless features. I personally don't want to play a random person online unless in a well run league, create an ultimate team, or have to be online to play my SINGLE PLAYER franchise.

Right now I think The Show will be the only sports game I'm going to buy from now on. With the exception of NHL once I see how that is next gen as 13 was my favorite sports game on PS3. 2k14 next gen is a great game gameplay wise, but screw their VC bull**** that requires me to play mygm on their crappy servers

I don't think sports games are on the way out per se but I do think the sports leagues need to be more flexible with licensing and allow different companies to try their hand at producing a solid title. I'd also like to see the development cycle moved from one to a two year cycle that way they can polish game modes and gameplay up rather than making the lifespan of the titles last a year at best.

I don't think they need diff companies to have it, but they shouldn't only give out rights to one company over another. Look at NBA, 2K couldn't use all star weekend or anything like that for years cause EA Sports had it(despite not really having game releases for a number of years). And for NHL, I believe 2K has the rights to NHLs all star weekend despite not making NHL games anymore.

All Star Weekend is just one example I can think of when it comes to licensing, but I'm sure there's other things that current companies can't(or couldn't) have done cause another company(that doesn't produce that game anymore) had the rights to.

I remember Microsoft had an entire sports line up and they were the ones who started that whole online legaues stuff and had the infrastructure and money to back it up.

Problem here is I think online is a bad thing for sports game right now because the core of these games aren't solidified enough to eliminate all of these issues and its taken the direction of microtransations and so on. I've said for years once online becomes a bigger priority than the single player and core experience then there is a problem, and it is.

Might be the best thing ever that the NFL license is going to die and it should stay that way because im sorry but one company is not big enough to carry that sport.

23 brings up a great point with Online and how it has comprimised the single-player experience. By and large, the core gameplay of sports games don't change much year-to-year. Part of that is due to the compressed development cycle, but it's also a conscious decision to keep things "fun and accessible" for the Online and casual gamer crowd.

There's one sports title that you could call a true simulation and that's MLB The Show. NBA 2K was all about sim a few years ago but has certainly changed course and has become a rave to see who can score 100 points first.

It's frustrating to look back and realize how little Madden, NCAA, NHL, etc. have changed in the last five years. Pop in Madden 10 and then play Madden 25 and be honest, how much has really changed?

I know for me, the stagnant nature of these sports titles, coupled with the reduction or removal of Offline features, has left me feeling apathetic towards sports video games. My gaming time is very limited and honestly, I'd rather play just about anything else than Madden or NCAA at this point.

At the end of the day I've been playing sports games for over 25 years now and I probably won't stop, but I will be much more selective in my purchases going forward. If a game doesn't have what I'm looking for, I'll just pick up an action-adventure game, RPG or RTS and call it a day.
