Re: Off Topic 2014
If it's an old dog, then get it on the premise that a good dog (or any dog for that matter) shouldn't die or live it's twilight years in a shelter. And may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

Re: Off Topic 2014
I'm really split.
We went to the humane society today, and there was an awesome dog there. He was well behaved, quiet (I've been there twice, haven't ever seen/heard him bark when there was plenty of barking/action going on around him) and generally seemed awesome. It's a cocker spaniel/poodle mix, so he doesn't shed. He's cute.
The problem is he's 9 years old. I'm not really sure what to make of adopting a pet starting on the back 9. Everywhere I've looked/the people I've talked to said that the breed normally lives 13-18 years (outliers on either side, naturally)... but it's a really hard decision. Made even harder because Mel fell in love with him as well.
Not many people want a dog that age so you will truly be saving him and giving him the good life that he deserves. Just imagine the little guy curled up beside you as your watching TV or playing video games, doesn't it just warm your heart?
I look forward to seeing his pics in the Pups thread later today. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Yeah get the dog now or you'll always wonder.
We got Rex at an advanced age. He was a German Sheppard (perhaps something else mixed in as well), had been a stray his whole life. He didn't know how to take a treat. He chased cats. He shat on the floor. He ran away once! (A good Samaritan found him and returned him ... Old habits die hard!)
But man, he learned quick. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated quickly as well. Thinking back, it was very tragic how he finally had a home but suddenly his body was dying on him. I remember saying my last goodbyes before catching the bus for school. God, that was hard... I'm getting choked up just thinking about it now.
I was probably in middle school or early HS at the time. Rex only survived a year and a half or two, but he is the most beloved dog I've ever owned. Grew up with two other dogs and I love them, but Rex was extra special. Giving him a year or two in a loving home before he passed was worth it. You know how they call it rescuing a dog when you get them from the SPCA? That's truly how our whole family felt.
I'll never forget that dog, man.Last edited by slickdtc; 07-31-2014, 08:49 AM.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: Off Topic 2014
Sadly, it'll be a little while yet because we have a vacation already paid for and coming up... plus we have to pay the $800 apartment pet deposit. That # seems a little on the ridiculous side to me, but I'm not 100% sure as we haven't dealt with it at other places. I just hope the apartment doesn't have a weight limit of ~25 pounds that they strictly enforce. He's 32 pounds, but isn't what I'd consider a "big" or even "medium" dog.
However... small pictures from what they have up.

$800 bucks?
Damn.
Last two places I've been only added $25 to the deposit and then the same amount to the monthly rent. I'm glad we didn't have to pony that up to get ours.

$800 seems high. It's usually half the normal deposit and a small amount added to rent.NFL - Vikings

Re: Off Topic 2014
He looks like a good dog. Did they say why the previous owner gave him up?
When we adopted our dogs (two brothers) last year they were only 4-5 months old. The Rescue Center didn't know too much about them, just that their owner had to give them up due to landlord issues. We brought them to our vet the next day and one of them had Coccidia, so it took some time to nurse him back to health. He sure is a good dog now though.
I also understand about the cost of kenneling dogs when you're out of town. Since we currently have 4, it's basically like paying for another hotel room at $100/day every night we're gone.
When my wife and I got together we each had a dog and then we got one together. 3 was supposed to be our max, but we ended up with 4. Our oldest probably won't be around much longer and I keep telling my wife that 3 is our max. Once he passes she has this plan... Instead of getting another dog we should start fostering dogs (so they can stay with us in a house with 3 other dogs and a big fenced in yard rather than at the shelter). I would like to, but I already know how that's going to work out. Once we get them in our home, she (and probably me too) will get attached and not want to give them up. Happy wife, happy life though, so we'll see how it goes... hopefully, later rather than sooner. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

I say pass on the dog. Something about not being able to teach old dogs new tricks turns me off on adopting one that old.Comment

Same thing happens with foster kids. Usually people like foster kids under the age of 12. Once they get beyond 12, they usually don't get adopted and end up stuck there until they turn 18.Comment
