    Thinking about moving.

Well have been born and raised in N.Y my entire life and all of my family is here too. I'm 35 years old and I'm a single father, it's my son and I. Also have a 11 years old daughter from another relationship but she lives with her mother. I see her old the time or whenever I want. I am involved with a woman now for 16 months.

Anyway. I'm really so sick and tires of N.Y and want to move. The place I have been thinking of moving is to Portland Oregon, reason being I love the city and my father use to live there and I was out there on 3 different trips, love the city of Portland and it's just my weather too plus really more affordable then NY terrible living cost. Just really tired of NY guys and it's starting to bother me.

Anyone love in Portland chime in of you don't mind.

    Thx for listening .

I don't live in Portland, but my first year of college I went to the University of Oregon before I transferred out to a JC in California and I would go to Portland every weekend. I loved Portland it's really nice and as long as you don't mind the rain most of the year then you'll love it. there is lots to do and see and you're not that far from Washington State either or the Coast. Only downside of Portland is there are a lot of weirdos that frequent the streets, but that's normal in a lot of places hell that's normal here on the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.

Yeah I was there when I was 15-18 every year for the summer, loved it. I just think it could be a great place for me that I'm getting older and really want to settle .

My son would be coming with me and my daughters as hard as it would be for me you leave would come to visit in summer. This won't happen for a year if I decide, I have to look for a job. I wanna so this bad.

If I were you, I'd want to leave New York too.

Oregon has no state tax so that's attractive.

What states are best for what you do? Start there.

35 years in NY, I'm sure FF has seen it all already. Anything in a Portland would probably be a drop off.

I would think the only thing holding you back would be your daughter. For that reason, I would try to find somewhere closer...a drive away.

I want to move, too, eventually. This NJ/NY life just isn't cutting it.

                    Re: Thinking about moving.

Yea I think you would regret moving so far away from your daughter.

If you want to move, and I wouldn't blame you for wanting change, I wouldn't just leave the decision as Portland or bust.

There are a lot of great cities you could move to in the east that are great that would leave you still just a day's drive from your daughter.

Have you ever been to Baltimore? Fantastic city and not too far away.

A few other suggestions that all depend on what you are looking for:

Wilkes Barre/Scranton, PA: Growing area but similar to the NY lifestyle. It would offer change and you would still be very close to your daughter, it's pretty much in the Pocono's.

Allentown, PA: Similar to WB/S, but about an 45 minutes drive to Philly, lots to do and a neat city.

Harrisburg is also a really fun city.

I've lived in a lot of places both in the East and the West. My favorite city is Albuquerque and it's where my parents live now. Beautiful but I will tell you, it kills my mother living so far away from me, I haven't been back home in 5 years. They are planning on moving east eventually because of it and I only bring that up because it relates to your scenario.

I love Pittsburgh. I was in a situation similar to yours where I just needed to move and I needed a change. I moved here because I"ve always loved this city and at the time my brother lived here. Best decision I've ever made.

Got a great job, bought a house, met a girl, pretty much anything you could hope for.

Good luck with whatever you do.

That's what is keeping me here and it's a big reason and a good one

Ditto to what others have said. IMHO you really need to be within a drive of your daughter. She's getting into her teen years--she'll definitely need you.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I agree with others, make it a driving distance between your daughter. Not cross country.

A little off topic - but I always hear how expensive it is to live on NY. Like 150k house is like a one bed room shack.

What is the average income to get by in NY?

I honestly don't know all that much about Portland, and I'm only 22, but I've been to a lot of different parts of the East Coast. What are the things about Portland that you find so attractive? Maybe thinking about that should be where you start if you're open to remaining on the East Coast but still being in a similar city.

Again, I don't know Portland all that well, but I feel like if it's the weather/natural beauty kinda thing that you dig, you might enjoy one of the (relatively) bigger cities in Vermont, or even something like the Ithaca/Cornell area in New York. Pittsburgh area might be good as well, though I haven't been there in a long time.

I'm trying to move too. Was born and raised in Rochester, NY and went to school in Syracuse. I'm trying to get a particular job in Albany because as far as starting jobs for after I graduate, it would be the absolute perfect job for me, but if I can't get that, I think I'm pretty much just going to try to find some sort of finance job in a new part of the country so that I can at least be excited about being somewhere new while I sort of pay my dues trying to work my way up to my dream job. I've always wanted to live somewhere near a decent sized city that has pro sports teams. Don't care so much about the geographic location, just want to see something new.
