They should read and watch stuff from Suze Orman. I was so financially irresponsible in my early 20s. Best thing I got from my dad was a book from her. She changed my life.

People get so unaware in financial traps they get in.

I don't ever go in debt, it's just kills you. Mortgage should be the only thing you go in debt in. Only reason I have a credit card is to rack up airline miles.

You should be able to put away 20% of your earnings a month. If you can't, you're spending too much.

You're first mistake is "lending" them $ and expecting repayment. It isn't happening. whenever you give people like this money, you need to consider it a gift, not a loan.

So if you're not willing to give it, with no expectation of repayment, don't give it.

If you give money to help towards the kids, it's going straight to the habit/addiction/wants. Helping out the kids is buying them clothes, buying the family groceries, giving a ride to a particular destination. Maybe even gift cards, but be selective.

You pretty much summed up my brother. He loves pills, weed, and alcohol and hates responsibility. Oh, and he has a son. He's bummed about 8k from my parents and another $ 3500 off my youngest brother. I hate what he had become, but wanted to help my nephew in any way possible. So I found out how with groceries and clothes and such.

It's tough, but as many have mentioned, "loaning" money just enables them. Sometimes, rock bottom is best for certain people to hit to learn to live within their means and take on some responsibility and accountability.
