Thinking about getting a Polynesian cover-up tattoo...

I got a tattoo when I was 18. I liked it at the time. I don't like it anymore. I wanna do a cover-up, but with the size of my current one, it seems the only thing I can really get that looks nice and would cover it up fully would be a Polynesian. Some of these look really amazing, but they can take upwards of 10-15 hours to complete at about $180/ hour. I can always just leave it be, but I really don't like it anymore. Here are some of the designs that struck me as cool looking that would provide the cover-up needed:

I know these are extreme, but the one I have is large and I just don't like it anymore. I'm kinda on the fence about this.

I know a guy who got a similar one to the pictures you included which took 9 straight hours, cost him around 900 bucks and I want to say he got a discount too. I really couldn't imagine spending almost a grand on something like that, but to each his own I guess.

Care to post the tattoo you want to cover up? How big is it? I'm assuming it's on your shoulder?

I would just leave it. What if you get this tattoo and decide 10 years later you don't like it either? How expensive is it to get tattoos removed?

I'd have to see the tattoo you want covered to make a judgement call. But this is why all of my tattoos are well thought out and weren't spur of the moment things, all took at least 2 years to plan out.

Fallacy. I have 3 that are incredibly meaningful, and always will be. Tattoos are what separates me from every other normal person in America.

Because getting a tattoo makes you 'not normal'.

                  What is "normal", anyway?

As to tattoos - I have none, I don't plan to get any, but I say do what makes you happy.

I wouldn't say having a tattoo separates you from "normal" people, it just adds a little bit of uniqueness to your body.

Also, normality is completely subjective to the person or culture they're in, there's not a set definition or code to be normal or not IMO. I mean, some people think face tattoos are normal and who's to say they're wrong? It's an opinion based idea.

Edit: As for tattoos, I don't think getting a tattoo at a young age is ever a good idea. How can you know what your tastes and morals are going to be like in 10 years? 20 years? 50 years? I'm sure people have gotten tattoo's at 18 without regrets, but for the most part I'm sure it's usually a mistake.

Re: Thinking about getting a Polynesian cover-up tattoo...

I got a tattoo when I was 18. I covered it up with another tattoo a couple years ago. It was a small thing on my wrist, now I've got my whole forearm covered.

Some people might wonder why I would get another tattoo to cover up one that was a 'mistake', it doesn't make sense to them.

That thought process is the fundamental difference between people who love tattoos and people who don't. Even the first tattoo wasn't a mistake to me, even if it wasn't necessarily a wise choice. Covering it up with another tattoo was not a fallback, it was an opportunity to get a new piece.

I didn't get tattooed to be trendy or cute or because I thought it was what's cool at the time, though I'm sure there are people who do such things and live to regret it. I've always had a fascination with tattoos, and I view it as a form of art.

Nothing wrong with it, and even though I see plenty of tattoos that aren't necessarily something I would get on my body, I'm still able to appreciate many of them.
