School shooting in Oregon high school; one student killed, gunman dead

My mom just told me and I looked it up.

I really don't even know anymore. I'm guessing these are more commonplace, and I'm guessing the media has everything to do with it. It's too sad. R.I.P. Emilio Hoffman.

Why are these kids so quick to pick up a damn gun these days. Not saying that some school beef is what led to this, but whatever happened to the days where you had a problem with a kid at school, you threw a few punches and everything was settled. And the worst thing that would happen is the other kids would laugh and poke fun at you for a few days if you lost the fight?

Media has made these things sexy. You go from a nobody to having your name and face plaster on every news station.
There is a wiki page for Seung-Hui Cho, but not for the valedictorian of his class. That's the motivation.

Thank the media for the increase in these things, just like the magazine that featured the Boston bomber on the cover. Real Brilliant. Still remember when Time magazine featured the columbine killers on the cover, titled monsters next door or something, that's exactly what they wanted. The media basically granted their last wish.

        Pathetic.

It's starting to feel like there should be a catch-all thread for these. They seem to be happening so much more frequently.. it's truly disturbing

Certainly. Somebody else also connected a lot of these young shooters to meds that they took recently before their violent rampages:

Very well written and insightful article. My tendency from my education is to always examine the mental health side, and despite this author saying that people use mental health as a platform when it comes to these tragedies, he's actually calling for it in this article.

Empathizing/reflective listening/etc is what mental health counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, et. al are supposed to do. That's about 75% of the training.

However, it's very easy to say, "Just listen. These people are crying for help and are giving away their plans..." Unfortunately, most of the time you don't know what you could have prevented until it happens. Maybe there have been 20 other possible tragedies that have been averted because someone did their job and listened and helped a trouble person. You just never know because they didn't happen.

The recent push in talking about mental illness as a means to explain evil is infuriating.

There are plenty of people with mental illnesses that don't go shooting up the place.

I would tend to agree, while I think mental health plays a part in many cases, I don't think it's the sole reason. Some people are just evil.

                        Can you define "evil"?

Simply put, I think people can be defined as evil when they knowingly and willingly cause harm to other people, specifically people who have done nothing wrong. I know people will respond "well people with mental health issues cannot be put in this category". As Matrix said, there are so many people with mental health issues that do not cause harm to people. Te percentage of people with some sort of mental health problem who do something like I would bet is less than one percent.

The issue with this argument is that you can't lump all mental illness into one category. There are so many variations. OCD isn't the same as Depression, which isn't the same as Schizophrenia, which isn't the same as Borderline Personality Disorder... and on and on. Maybe "evil" is a specific type of mental illness, or maybe it's a symptom that many different illnesses share.

You're right, there are millions of people that have some mental illness that do not commit any crimes. But that shouldn't discount the fact that mental illness plays a large role in these tragedies.

There is still so much to be learned and understood about how the brain works, and especially about how it works improperly at times.

One of the more disturbing interviews I've ever seen is of a little girl about 10 years old who is talking to a therapist about killing her family with absolutely no remorse or emotion. Who knows what could become of this girl and what she could have done to her family without someone working with her and trying to understand what her issues stemmed from and how (if at all) she can be helped.

If there is such a thing as someone being just "evil" what can we do to try to prevent these tragedies from happening?
