But my height ruins those hopes, how does a guy like Michael carter williams or any other tall point guards prove their capable of playing the position rather than off the ball?

Asking this because typically at the gym people ask me who I play for, what position, and what not. I tell them small forward and they're quick to say I should play point guard so I started considering it

One, I'll reiterate that 6'1 is not at all too tall to play point guard. I don't care what level you're at. If you're 8 years old and 6'1 and the best player for the job then it is what it is.

With that said, there's no reason to be even thinking position specific. At your age you want to improve your game for a chance to play at the next level. At your height, that will likely be as guard (you can keep growing but right now you're the height of a guard). Even more importantly, great court vision, understanding where teammates should be on offense (and defense!), being a coach on the court, etc. are all great traits for a PG but are even better when others on the court have them as well. Everything about my game screamed PG, and that's what I pretty much played everywhere BUT my high school team where I was the SF. All that meant was I didn't bring the ball up as much and set up the offense.

Develop into the best player you can be and let the coaches figure out the best place to put you for the team. Even if you end up at PF, any coach would be happy to have you on the floor as a 4 when the other team is putting on a press, or you need ball handlers at the end of a close game to close things out.

I'll piggy back on strength training being the single biggest thing.

I'm in my 20s now, and I have the skillset to play basketball, but the biggest thing holding me back, by far, is my strength and conditioning.

I'm not on the "Biggest Loser" or anything, but I am always far behind others on the court in terms of athleticism.

And it only gets harder to make up as you get older. The sooner you start really getting serious in the exercise/weight room, the better off you will be.

And 6'1 is just fine for a point guard.

So here's the competition at point guard on each level
Freshman- I played at the camp against him and he makes normal passes and I think I recall him having nice range. I'm thinking about it and I think he's the only guard I know of actually.
JV- http://youtu.be/yTChaeWbCMc this is one of my friends videos, there is a lot of guards competing at JV I think (like 4-5) so
Varsity- http://youtu.be/sj9SyCgDASs that's a backup who's been on varsity since freshman year, the starter is a senior

The JV kid (Jarron?) looks like a PG. The varsity kid looks like a wing player who likes to shoot.

After watching the videos I go back to my original statement... become a better basketball player and let the coaches figure out where to put you. I've had a team where the 5 best players were probably natural PG/SG types. We ran a fast break offense that used a flex set in the half court. You think anyone ever told Lebron James to stop working on "PG" skills? He was huge in HS and just started working on his post game 2 years ago. Build on your natural game.

Hey I was looking through my old threads and came across this, I want to thank you all for the advice. I ended up playing freshman and JV and while I had good enough ball handling skills, my guard aspirations were busted because my perimeter shot is not good enough right now lol. I'm liking forward finally, I realize with a little tweaks to my shot mechanics I could have a huge advantage with my length at 6'3. I feel I've gotten a lot better in prep for AAU.
