How To Get The Wife To Not Kill Us?

I moved into the house I am currently in a little over a year ago. It has natural gas heating and appliances. The first time either my wife or I have used these. We had electric in our last home and at each of our houses growing up. Well within the past week she has left the gas on for an extended period of time on the stove and I was the one that discovered it by the smell of rotten eggs both times. Both times it has given me a headache. I'm trying to explain the seriousness of this to my wife but I'm not sure that she gets it. So I'm trying to explain this to her without being a complete jerk because honestly we have a good relationship and I'm not trying to get in a screaming match over this. My thinking right now is that I just got get a carbon monoxide alarm and put it over the stove.

Has anyone had any similar instances or stories such as this? Like I said I don't want to get in her face and yell about this but I need to try to let her know how serious it is. Is buying an alarm a good way to show that?

Thanks for any future help guys.

Would she react differently if you bring up the monetary loss of leaving it on instead?

I understand the severity of your point but maybe try shifting the importance to money and see if she is more careful knowing that by leaving it on it is costing you guys unnecessary money?

    Just a thought.

I wish I had more helpful advice, but I just wanted to say that I still leave my burner on occasionally. It's been 2 years that I've been living in this house now and when you drop burners to real low, they aren't even noticable. At least electric it would stay red to some level. All I can do now is make sure that I check the burners on my way out of my house every morning to make sure even if I didn't cook anything.

Also, maybe put some tape or something on the knobs to make them stand out so you can tell the gas is on from across the room?

There's gotta be something on YouTube about a place blowing up because of a gas leak. Show it to her.

            Yeah go the youtube route.

How hard is it to turn the burner all the way off? It should have a notch to you know it is off. I don't mess around with gas. I was moving my dryer and thought I had the valve shut off, but for some reason it was a weird valve and it wasn't off. Once I smelled it, I got out of the house and shut it off outside. Then went back in after a minute or 2 and looked at the valve. Any little spark, turning a light on, etc can blow your house up.

How is the smell of gas going through your house? Did your wife leave the burner in the "ignite" position without lighting it? On my stove, there's a clicking noise when you try and light a burner so you know gas is flowing. Did she somehow leave the burner on without lighting it? That is a serious issue as you can die from CO inhalation. Headache, nausea, dizziness are early symptoms of CO inhalation. I would be straightforward and let her know how dangerous that is.

What is it that she doesn't "get"? I'm confused how one doesn't understand the danger of leaving gas on.

Re: How To Get The Wife To Not Kill Us?

Sorry for not responding for awhile. We talked about it and she said she would be more careful about it. We don't have any ventilation in the house so it really doesn't pick up and travel through the house. The gas company does make sure it has that rotten eggs smell so you will know when it is left on. I'm think for the most part that she just leaves it on a low setting and forgets about it and eventually the flame goes out and we are just left with gas coming out.

I never got an explanation about why she told me that night that she didn't think it was serious. We talked about it and I think she gets how serious it is now and we are moving on. If it happens again I'll probably just get a monitor and place it over the stove that way we will both know.

If you don't have a carbon monoxide detector you should get one anyways. I don't think you are suppose to put them right by the gas though. I put mine in a hall adjacent to the kitchen so it would detect it if needed.

We have one in the garage by our appliances in there and that is where it comes into the house. That's the only we have though.

Definitely get a a smoke alarm with a carbon monoxide detector. I'm glad you two talked it out and she realized it was important and you weren't just nagging her.

Still though it's a good idea to have a few smoke alarms (with co2 detectors) around the house.
