OS, I desperately need some help.
OS I'm in a bit of a rough situation and I can use a bit of advice from some of our older members. I have zero clue what to do with my life and it's something I've worried about for the past 4 years. I'm currently a Junior in college. I'll be graduating with a degree in History and a minor in business. Only problem is I just don't know what I want to do for a living and it haunts me every day. It's all that I ever think and worry about and it's gotten to the point where I dread getting up every morning.

What do you like to do? What are some of the things that you would do all day even if nobody paid you? First you've gotta find what u are passionate aabout, even if its not remotely related to your major. Once u pinpoint those things it may give you clarity on what type of career u should pursue -

I could talk about baseball all day, It's one of the few things I love in life. Reading is also something that I enjoy as well as History. I'm getting my degree in history because I do truly like it. But I'm not too sure about the job prospects of that outside becoming a teacher/professor.What do you like to do? What are some of the things that you would do all day even if nobody paid you? With those majors, what about teaching? Oops...Just read your last post. It's a great profession and in my opinion, a very rewarding profession.Last edited by mike24forever; 11-18-2014, 07:39 PM.I am the lesson after the fall.Comment

Here's a link from the American Historical Association with some options: http://www.historians.org/jobs-and-p...history-majorsI could talk about baseball all day, It's one of the few things I love in life. Something that I considered as I was majoring in history was working for intelligence agencies (CIA/FBI). They love history majors.Comment

Don't get me wrong Teaching is a great profession. I could see myself as a teacher I just want to explore all of my options.
I never knew about the whole CIA/FBI side of things. It certainly sounds interesting I'll give it a look. Here's a link from the American Historical Association with some options: http://www.historians.org/jobs-and-p...history-majors

Man, being in the fbi/cia would be bad ***. I was considering it but after talking to an fbi agent I wouldn't be able to pass the lie detector test with all the illegal activities I did during college

With a history major and a business minor, you could probably get into a lot of different business type of fields. You could also always consider grad school to go in another direction if you have a last minute change of heart.
My little (from my fraternity) is having the same troubles as you. He's also a History major, so you're not alone at all.NFL: Bills

Re: OS, I desperately need some help.
College (the learning part) can be taken many different ways. For some it's very focused, preparing your for tests you need to pass to get in the next school (grad/med/law/etc). For some it's to figure out what you enjoy doing and how to make money at it. For some, it teaches you how to learn which can then be used later in any direction.
There are tons of people not doing anything close to their major, myself included. If you're thinking about this as much as you say (it's great that you're that focused now, even if it seems like a burden at the moment), just pay attention to every little thing that excites you and try to think of what careers may be related. Something in baseball may seem like a stretch but even with that, there are tons of directions you can go, including tying in your love to history.
Something else to try to nail down is how important is money. Teaching is a great job but not if your goal is to get rich. Meanwhile work politics and office life can be nice on the wallet but leave some people empty inside. Just some things to think about outside of subjects and fields to help.
I'm sure your school has a career counseling office. It may be a good idea to take a myers briggs test and/or other job placement tests to see what jobs fit best with your personality. Doesn't mean any of them are right for you, but more information to help you have some direction while trying to make a decision.Comment

Re: OS, I desperately need some help.
Somewhat similar boat, I majored in history, got my masters in education with the idea of being a teacher, but the job market is just so bad out there I've been subbing while I look for the past 2 years, but at this point I'm so frustrated I've thought about exploring other options, but don't really know where to start. The business minor should help you though, that's at least more of a concrete direction to go if you choose.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: OS, I desperately need some help.
Thank you for the amazing advice. I'm going to take the myers briggs test as well. I'll be honest with you while money is somewhat important to me, my ultimate goal is not to "get rich". I really just want to find a career that fits me the best.College (the learning part) can be taken many different ways. Re: OS, I desperately need some help.
Sometimes you gotta get lucky and stumble into an opportunity, too. It's happened a few times to me, and I only have a semester's worth of college on my résumé.
I'm currently working for a small toy company, and I can say I really like it and it's rewarding bringing joy to kids (and adults!) and expanding their creative minds through play.
I always said I'd end up doing something that I never would've thought. I know I've been lucky, but my main point is, there's probably something like that out there for you, in the field of your study or not.
My suggestion would be to not worry too much about it because as long as you got the hunger to better yourself, it'll work out.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds
