    I have a copyright question

Not really sure where to put this but I need your guys' help so...

I'm making a montage for my YouTube channel and I'm using a song from the soundtrack. Is that copyright? I know Steve did that with his 2K15 video so I was wondering if I was going to get into any trouble for doing it.

    Thanks

If the song has a copyright.....I believe it is the life of the author plus 70 years.....but I'm going to say that unless you are trying to make $$$ off of it AND someone(in the industry) notices...they are not going to bother you about it.

Yeah I believe if you try to monetize is when they make a whiff. Especially popular videos

Thanks for your answers guys. In your opinion should I find another song or stick with the one I have. I was thinking about monetizing but I wanted to know what you guys think.

Monetizing using material that isn't yours is a no-go.

YouTube offers songs that are free to use (and can be monetized with). They're not usually the songs you want, but using music by somebody else is already pushing it. Trying to monetize on top of that is playing with fire.

I've found there's some artists whose songs will make a copyright claim, but your video will stay alive and playable... as long as they're not monetized.

Look around for something that might be royalty free. Or if your video editing program is capable, you may be able to integrate a purchased track. For example.... with VideoStudio/Corel, you can integrate something called Smart Sound which will customize the length of the song to your video (i.e., will fade out automatically with the end of the video or wherever you tell it to). Smart Sound is royalty free.

Even if you don't moneitze it, you will get a copy right strike. I have gotten plenty just from the music that plays during times outs of NBA 2K15, Live 15 and FIFA 15.
