    Quick Survey for a Class

If you have the time, could you briefly jot down a response to the following 3 questions. It is for a class I'm taking for my principal licensure. I thought asking this question here could give me a more diverse collection of opinions. I appreciate your time very much.

    What is a good school?
    What is a good teacher?
    What is a good student?

Good school: has good teachers, you feel comfortable there, and the school offers lots of options in terms of curriculum; in a perfect world, they'd offer more freedom to figure things out on your own as opposed to having to do everything exactly the way that a teacher tells you to

Good teacher: Can relate to the students, make their classes interesting, and is available

Good student: Pay attention/make a contribution to the class, do their work, and ask questions if they don't understand something

I could probably come up with more specific stuff if I gave it more thought, but off the top of my head, that's what I'd go with.

What is a good school? One that focuses on teaching a student the necessary educational and life skills that will help make them be successful when they reach adulthood. The best lessons I should have been taught are an understanding of how math translates into my personal finances, and how my interactions will allow me to relate to people in my field of employment. I think the education system should rethink the idea of busy-work that has no purpose to these goals.

What is a good teacher? One who prepares you to be successful. One who makes learning fun. One who makes you want to wake up each day and attend their class. One who gives you something to take to heart that will stay with you long after you leave their classroom. More than just information, it's about transformation.

What is a good student? One that takes the time to apply what they are learning, understanding that their study and work habits are setting them up for the rest of their life. They'll one day need to take things from the classroom and apply them to their marriage, children, career and community. Laziness, procrastination, and apathy are the opposite of a successful student. The above 2 (good school and good teacher) will have helped create the good student.

GOOD SCHOOL: One that fosters an atmosphere of critical thinking and learning. It seems to me that education has become more standardized than ever before what with standardized tests and strict enforcement of the curriculum. A good school would be a place that loosens some of that regimented quality because people are not automatons. We all learn at a different pace and a different way. As for critical thinking, I believe when it comes to subjects like history and science there should be more freedom for discussion and discourse. Yes, it could lead to some crazy things coming out of the mouths of students but it offers a teacher and the school a chance to open their minds to said subjects in a freer and more democratic way rather than having it pounded into your head.

GOOD TEACHER: A good teacher is one who can relate to his/her students and be able to open up dialogue. I strongly believe in the value of co-operative and discussion heavy education. Some of the best teachers I ever had were ones that related to their students, were able to have intelligent and free flowing group discussion and able to present the material in a fresh and innovative way. This is not always possible especially with the rank and file level of some teachers but I do believe that there should be an openness rather than a doctrinal approach.

GOOD STUDENT: A good student IMO, is one who is attentive, inquisitive and wants to be given the tools necessary to achieve their goals in life. Not all students are going to be that open minded but a good student is one that will at least listen and take in the material in a way that it will stick in their minds for a long time. As I said above, people are not automatons so some students may be prolific at written work, others are better at learning through the auditory/visual method and then there are some that will always have a hard time no matter what you try. It's not for a lack of trying and a good student will let their frustrations be known but at the same time want to actually see a positive end result. If students have a combination of the right kind of school and teacher they will almost automatically become more open and accepting of the material they've been given to learn. It's an integrated situation because if you have a total failure on one level than it's going to make it awfully difficult for the task of shaping the minds of our future in a positive way.

Being in high school now, I think I will be able to help you out big time.

What is a good school? One that has high standards in all departments, and puts in the effort to meet them year after year. Among the areas in which the standards should be high in are academics, or course, music/arts, and athletics. The arts and athletics are what keep students motivated. They are the reason the students give their maximum effort almost all the time.

What is a good teacher? One that is actively invested in their student's learning. They take initiative and go to the student when they feel that the student needs help, because many times, the student is too afraid to ask for help. They should also be a source for non-school related help, and be a trusted adult. However, it is important that they are not too casual or friendly with their students, especially in middle school and high school settings. Lastly, they should make the learning environment fun, with a mixture of hands on learning and visual learning.

What is a good student? One that remains motivated to perform well, even when the workload both in and out of school seems unbearable. Even when they get wrapped up in extracurricular activities, they find time to complete their schoolwork to the best of their ability, and do so without complaining. (Many kids in my school do this, and I can't stand this. They think they're the only ones who play a sport, the only ones who do not get home until 9 every night. It's just stupid. Everyone else has a similar situation, and they get through it without complaining.) They do not have to be honors students, just hard-working and determined to give it their best shot all the time.
