    Canceled Directv - Question...

    Hi All -

So I officially 'cut the cord' around 11AM EST yesterday morning from Directv after 3 years! Fortunately during my time with Directv I didn't upgrade or get new equipment that would have 'magically' renewed my contract for 2 additional years or something of that sort so it was a clean break...Although, they were throwing offers at me left and right, my fam and I wanted to really give streaming a shot...

Now...I'm wondering...I checked my Directv account and it says the following:

"Your account has been disconnected. If you have an amount due, you can pay your balance online, or by calling Customer Service at 1-800-531-5000. Your balance must be paid in full to reinstate DIRECTV service."

So I'm like...awesome...I have officially broken up with Directv with no hassles...But when I went downstairs and turned on the tv...I still had channels...Its been almost 24 hours...Is there a particular reason that I'm still getting channels, but my Directv account says my service is disconnected. And when I checked my upcoming billing period costs, they were all 'zero-ed' out...

Just wanted to check with the community how long it took for Directv to cut your channels off upon cancelation b/c I don't want to be paying any pro-rated cost when I canceled the service already...

FYI: Its been about 24 hours since I called to cancel and even received a cancellation notice via email to confirm that I have cut off their service.

Usually when you call and cancel, they turn the service off at 12am the next day, so I would think that your service should be completely turned off. If you still have channels tomorrow, I would give them a call. I bet you wake up tomorrow morning with no service though.

Maybe you were payed up through the end of the current billing cycle?

And you will have to send your access cards in by mail before you are officially out.

As someone who is a very happy and pleased customer of DirecTv for almost 10 years, I'd call them again to verify all this. I have NEVER had a single bad episode with them, and they are ALWAYS helpful. If you're polite and kind, they will ALWAYS do so to you in return (and I never pay full price for anything, always doing my best to work with them on various packages I purchase). But I'd call them just to double-check all this. And the access cards will need to be sent back, so that should have all been verified with them, as they will send you postage free envelopes to return them (they might even want their equipment back - another question you should ask).

You're paid through your next billing date. Unless they told you on the phone that you would be receiving a refund/credit for what you had paid ahead, it won't cut off until then.

Yeah…I’m expecting that at midnight tonight it should be turned off…I thought it was going to be turned off last night at midnight so when the Cavs-Warriors game went to OT, I was like…man…ABC better speed this game up make it commercial free so it don’t shut off before the game was over. LOL!

Come to think of it…I was paid up until June 4th (the end of my billing cycle)…Thanks for pointing this out fellas! So I’m pretty sure (and hoping) that it gets shut off at midnight…Which is pretty cool of Directv since they could have turned it off yesterday and I would have been out one day that I paid for… Not that it would have bothered me…But atleast I got to watch Game 1 of the NBA Title Game!

Yep…They advised that in 4 to 7 days I would receive a return envelope for the access card. So I’m keepin’ a look out for that and will make sure I have a tracking number on it when I return the item.

I absolutely agree with you re: Directv from my own personal experience throughout my 3 years of subscription. My cancellation was painless…Of course the retention department kept me on the phone for 30 minutes giving me some amazing deals (i.e. lower my monthly bill to $58, free NFL Sunday Ticket, etc…) but really just want to give streaming tv (Sling TV and Netflix) a try ESPECIALLY with very limited time on my hands these days.

Yeah, they advised they would send an envelope for the access card for me to send back. But the equipment would not need to be returned so they directed me to a URL re: recycling the box.

And I overwhelmingly agree that if you give respect that they will offer you the same respect back. Heck…I even had a conversation with the retention department person about her having 2 kids and me have 3 kids and what the heck are we gonna do to keep our lil rascals not bored at the house…A very positive experience of canceling the service…No pressure to stay and very enticing offers that I was given.

I also thought about that as well…That they have certain days they shut off tons of systems in one swoop…Out of curiosity...How long did it take to shut yours off? My wife was like…its ok…you get some free days of the service so don’t complain! LOL!

at least a couple days, i disconnected my boxes after that. got their prepaid box and sent my gear back saturday. the only one part of the process that was less than smooth was that they used my autopay for the last payment when they said they wouldn't, no big deal though

Worst thing about disconnecting is the mound of mail you will receive from them trying to get you to sign up again. A year later I am still getting at least 1 or 2 items a week.

Got a question for you my friend....How long did it take to receive your prepaid box to send back the gear....In my particular situation, they only requested for the access card....I have yet to receive the return envelope for the access card and my service was disconnected on 6/5/2015....Fortunately, when I checked my billing statement, it said a grand total of $0.00 to date....so hopefully I won't run into any issues with this access card....Any info would be great since I don't want to get some bill that states they didn't receive my access card when they didn't even send the return envelope as advised.
