I know man lol. I'm pretty ashamed. I've been following this thread forever and when someone posts something I'm always like how did they not know that. Now I'm part of that group lol.

I was seriously having a The Berenstein Bears and The Berenstain Bears moment.

Deadliest Catch is not about playing pass with a hand grenade.

When listening to NFL gameday content on CBS Sports Radio, every so often I would always hear one of the commentators randomly chime in mid-sentence with: "I am eagle."

It took me forever to realize that he was referring to himself, and his name is Ian Eagle, with Ian being unusually pronounced "Aye-Ann" instead of "Ee-En."

He’s one of my favorite announcers. Not the flashiest but very versatile. Great on the radio.

I thought he was saying some sort of CBS NFL slogan thing, maybe something that had to do with the CBS eye or because he was picking out multiple games at a time. I really had no idea haha.

I honestly had no idea. It was just one of those things that just slipped right by. I had no idea what he was saying at all lol.

When I was in HS one of my friends was one of these mega genius kids, and he had an entire friend group of other mega geniuses, it was very Big Bang Theory-esque. I consider myself to be pretty smart but I'm not on that level. First time I hung out at their place I noticed a large poster in the basement that said "Physco Clown", I joked "what's a physco clown?" and they derisively snickered at me "it says 'psycho clown'", I said "no, look at again", and it hit them all at once that this poster they've had in the basement for years had a typo and none of them noticed. Made me feel good

For decades, I believed that the word sabotage was derived from the word sabot for a type of shoe because I heard that in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. But I've just found out it's not actually true.

Re: Things that took you way too long to realize....

I just now realized that the ASL teacher at my high school is deaf.

An instructional assistant needed coverage for a period that I took on my prep, and it was the ASL class who was taking a test that period. Someone had to be in the room to ensure no talking, and I didn't understand at the time. I actually didn't for about half of the period. Even when I tried to ask him something and he motioned to me, I thought he was pulling a funny like: "In ASL class, we only use sign. We don't speak, ever." Kind of like a rule where you might only speak Spanish in a Spanish class, or something. When the class started laughing, I started to get the gist.

I mean it's funny, we never really walk in each other's circles, but I pass by him in the hall every so often and give him a glancing nod. He even appears in all-staff meetings. He has contributed to e-mail chains, but that's neither here nor there, it's not like he's blind. My point is though I had no reason to suspect that he was anything different when it came to any sort of modalities in communication. Honestly, I don't even think I knew he was a language teacher of any sort; I knew his classroom, and history is also taught out of there... so I thought he was a history teacher.

On that token, I think that is astounding, and kind of fits in as one of those pleasures of life. For someone with such a disability, it would often lend one towards the belief that they would display a lot of inhibition. You are a student entering an intro ASL class, and your teacher can't hear you? How does that first day start? He often doesn't require an IA either, except for test days. The students were so responsible though, and it was a glorious period for me to observe. Every bit of communication on that test was a lot of back-and-forth, all in sign (this test was all done by the teacher motioning things per blank that they had to fill in, from vocab to time to full sentences, etc.). I was floored by it, and furthermore floored that he seemed to pull off this whole time that I thought he was ordinarily functioning with his sense of hearing.
