    Visiting Portland

Going to Portland, Oregon for a bachelor party this Thursday through Sunday. Any tips and suggestions? I'm not the best man so I'm not planning anything but I'd like to know if there's anything I should relay to the group.

We're already scheduled for dinners and partaking in visiting breweries and all the adult establishments to be found there. I knew about the breweries but I was shocked about the statistics regarding the latter.

Should be a good time, despite having flying and partying over 9/11 weekend and having to watch Week 1 in a bar on Sunday morning.

I live 2.5 hours from Portland now (on the coast) and visit often. Voodoo donuts is a must as is Salt and Straw (ice cream). Also, the food trucks are really cool and unique. If you like coffee, stump town coffee is excellent. For Sushi Bamboo is the place to go.

I think the donut shops (Voodoo and Blue Star) are already in the plans, and I think the ice cream place is too. I can't stand coffee but if they want some I can tell them about it. I figure there's tons of shops all over the place anyway, haha.

Is it safe and clean downtown? Walking around late at night and such? We'll be staying in Pearl District. Not sure what that area is like. I figure the city overall will be way too hipster douche for me but as long as I get some good food and beer I'll be happy enough.

Yes, the city is super clean and I consider it really safe. I have taken my family (my wife and our four kids) and walked the city at night with no issues. We've been to Blazer games and the ridden the trolley after dark. Never once felt unsafe...the only thing that gets old is Portland has this real "hipster" vibe going for it, which is fine, but talking with most people who have lived in Portland their whole lives and it's fake, something that started in the mid-90s to boost a sagging economy.

I've been to Portland twice. The first visit was weirdly underwhelming. The night we passed through, we happened to be in a downtown area where the streets seemed to be lined with homeless folks and tents. In hindsight, it had to have been for something specific, perhaps something involving Portland State University, since looking at the map, that's kind of where we were near (a few blocks southeast of the campus). Or maybe we were just in the wrong area.

Our trip through this past July was way, way better. We spent time downtown near the Arlene Schnitzer concert hall and also veered north of the Williamette. Everything felt really pleasant both downtown and in the areas to the north (we stopped at Paxton Gate, which was a trip, ha). We passed by VooDoo but didn't stop because it appeared so busy (with a giant line and whatnot). Also, I assume you'll have better transportation around town than we did -- we were in a car -- so parking was a bit of a pain.

As far as the hipster stereotype, we definitely saw some unique folks but being an Ann Arbor native, it wasn't totally out of the ordinary. Most of my Portland friends stand behind Portlandia, basically stating they really got it right.

Definitely seemed like a spot I'd be willing to spend much more time.

Cool sounds good. I'm upset that the weather is going to be so warm. I was looking forward to some typical Oregon cool. Temps are gonna be in the upper 80s basically. Ugh.

I'm not too keen on standing in line for donuts. Maybe there's some other places that are less known that are better.

I don't know what kind of transportation we're going to have. Probably some combination of walking and Uber I guess.

If you are looking for some off the beaten path places the Waffle window and King Burrito are good places and pretty cheap. The choices on the waffles are endless and the waffles are great. You basically walk up to a window, order and they shoot out your order. I do believe they have indoor seating now, they used to just have a tent off the side of the building. The Burrito place looks sketchy but don't let that deter you, food is excellent. Nothing like a big old burrito after some heavy drinking!
