). People always tell me I am not energetic, outgoing, and extroverted enough to work in marketing. I often get criticized for being too quiet and/or laid back . You don't see many introverts in management or high level positions. Most people think just because you are an introvert that you are a bad communicator but that is not true. People often do not like you if you do not kiss people's *** or act super outgoing. I don't understand why everybody is expected to be an extrovert. Individuality is discouraged in this world.

Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
I have had a marketing degree for YEARS but I cannot get a job in marketing(never did an internship either so that is part of the problem

Re: Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
I'm an introvert and found success as a salesperson and now I'm an entrepenur. I don't get where you say introverts are not in high positions, the President, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Einstein are all introverts.
Stop accepting what people tell you and you tell them whats up and how it is. Make your own portfolio of marketing ideas. Do free or small fee projects for smaller businesses so you can show people you have talent and build your portfolio.
I know its a fictional story but Peggy from Mad Men is an introvert in the story and showed her talent through hard work and innovation. She never accepted being a female in almost male industry. Take inspiration in that and work hard and create ****.Comment

lol i had no idea the president was an introvert. I can only imagine how hard it would be for an introvert to do all that public speaking. Btw, did you struggle in sales at first because you were an introvert? What made you want to go into sales, especially since it is the opposite of your personality? not judging. just curious. I have interviewed for some sales positions and I actually got to the final round of interviews once, but didnt get an offer.

Re: Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
An introvert doesn't mean being shy. Introverts prefer to be more alone than being around a lot of people because its draining.
I got into sales through customer support on the phones and my strength wasn't selling our products but conversing with customers on what their needs are and offering how we can help them. I didn't treat it as sales as I was always treated it as a consulting or helping. I took joy in that actually and that's where my confidence came from. I worked on my delivery, voice and practiced. I wasn't afraid to mess up and kept going at it.
I'm always very sincere and that gave people trust in me. When you have that you can almost sell anything to them but at the same time you don't and sell them on what can actually help them succeed in what they are going for.
Kehlis is right, you can't blame the world for whats going wrong, you have to find out within you whats going on and get out of your comfort zone.
I love this quote from a yoga guru: "Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory"
Your degree is only 1% of your success and what you do is the rest.
Why not go out and get your own clients and help out struggling businesses in your local area. I'm sure you went by a place and thought they have a great product but weren't marketing it right.Comment

No, I haven't encountered any businesses yet who weren't marketing right. But I am sure businesses can always use more marketing ideas. I have to brush up on my knowledge, though, because I forgot a lot of the stuff I learned while I was in school and marketing has changed so much now. I read marketing blogs , however, and follow marketing people on twitter to learn from them.

Re: Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
I'm not sure you do though since you seemed shocked that an introvert could give such good public speeches.
Being unable to speak in public is a shyness matter. Not an introvert/extrovert matter. There are many extroverts who struggle to speak in public.
Being an introvert has nothing to do with one's ability to speak in public, it's a personality trait, nothing more.
As an introvert you are still able to stay away from others when you feel it's not necessary to interact but still step up when the time comes. Many of the best salesmen are introverts who just know how to act when the moment comes.Comment

Re: Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
I just started work at a Dutch Bros, which is a coffee stand that some on the west coast might be familiar with. It requires you to always be energetic, outgoing, extroverted and friendly with customers. I have no problem doing that, I'm not shy, and it's fun, but I don't really gel with people there. I have a couple friends who work there from High School (we just graduated last year). Sometimes after work they'll go to a bar, or to a party after work, and while always invited, I never go. So I'm not shy, I'm just an introvert. I'd rather go home and hang out with my girlfriend and watch Netflix or something.
I'd rather be with my girlfriend then a bunch of young adults partying all night when they have work the next day. That's being introverted. I still get along with them and like them, but it's just not for me.
Anyway, to get to the point, there's more than just being an introvert or extrovert. We don't split people by the two, there's a lot more that goes into being successful, mainly hard work, determination, etc.
There's no one stopping you from achieving success in the field you want success in just because you're an introvert.Comment

I'm the same way. Work in my college's athletic department with the teams directly. I chat with them will go to lunch with them and that just really started this year with our men's soccer program. Have been invited to some of their parties but never go. That's not for me. I'm not a huge party guy. Don't drink that often maybe couple times a month but that's it. I would much rather be by myself watching sports or Netflix or something on TV.Comment

Re: Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
I wouldn't say that introverts are at a disadvantage in today's world...in fact, I'd almost argue that it's easier to be an introvert in the modern world than it was in the past. Another part of the difference between an introvert and extrovert is in the way they want to process information. Research has shown that introverts typically prefer to sit back and process/refine a thought completely before sharing it, whereas extroverts often preferred to process information out loud (a verbal catharsis so to speak.) But with the way that technology has evolved, how texting and instant messaging are more prevalent than ever and are often preferred methods of communication, this seems to benefit introverts. Because the medium allows them to refine and process at their own pace, draft and redraft, and then hit send.Check out my Houston Astros Dynasties:

Re: Why is the world not introvert-friendly?
Maybe you're not an introvert by the true definition of the word. Maybe it's more so the features of exuberance and out-going attributes for which you were criticized. Also, keep in mind you're taking it from a very small sample of just your experiences, not the entire world. Maybe it's more that you need to find your particular marketing niche versus the one that you are in. Lots of maybes but what can you expect from getting opinions on the internet.
