Approaching 5 years cancer free, how it changed my life

At the end of this month, if my doctor clears me I will be 5 years cancer free.

Cancer changed me. It's taken me a good bit of time to realize it but it's effect on me was more than any physical change.

It changed the way I think and although I wouldn't wish cancer on even my worst enemy I do wish a lot of people could see life the way one sees it when they are faced with possible impending death.

Here's what has changed about my outlook...

My elders used to say "Life is too short..." and as a youth I thought it was some sort of cornball saying. Never really thought about it. But life is pretty short and being told you have a disease makes that saying really hit home.

In fact, it's pretty much the saying I base my life upon since my diagnosis.

    So my advice?

Don't waste a minute of your life doing something you hate.

Don't waste a minute of your life dealing with people, relatives or not, who make you unhappy.

Don't waste a minute of your life arguing over something trivial.

Don't give people the power to upset you. Only you can allow that.

Don't care what people think if you're doing the right thing.

Don't overthink what other people do if it doesn't affect you.

Don't do group think. Think for yourself.

Most importantly, don't live for the future!!

Be happy in the now because today may be all the future you're going to ever have.

And lastly, believe in yourself because if you don't then who else will?

You and I have not "talked" a lot but I have followed your journey. While I have not faced cancer myself, my Mother is a survivor though, I have walked a pretty dark road myself.

Your post is refreshing and enlightening. I am amazed by mans ability to get through times like these. I have wondered many times through the last three years if I would survive myself. Your courage has been an inspiration to many who have followed your path and I know that I speak for everybody when I say "Well done" and we wish you continued freedom from your challenges.

Congrats man!!! And your post everybody should live by that. No matter what. I hate to use this song title but your post made me of think it. We should all "Live Like You Were Dying". Also some other things I would add to your list.

Take a chance if you don't like what you did, all you lost was some time nothing else. And maybe a little money but who cares.
Make the most of every day because the reality is it COULD be your last.

          Great advice!

"Group think" is one of the reasons I'm getting a divorce.

That's awesome man, yeah that is exactly what I have noticed the most is that people around me get so upset over small things like someone cutting them off in traffic or whatever, I'm just like "whatever man, at least it's not CANCER..."

Small things just don't get to me in the same way, I'm just so much happier to be alive and not cancerous that I cannot get upset when something of that nature happens.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Thanks countryboy! Remember that one time we met up at that store up north to get NCAA 10 or such and then went to McDonalds? That rocked! I miss the hunt of NCAA I think as much as the damned game!!
