    Re: Dog advice

I should have included the pic of our Maltese. It's funny as it looks like she was hunted like wild game and mounted on the den wall (though it's just her sitting on our pergo flooring). Just the way it turned out!

The first is our Shistzu in the latter years.

I know you said small dog, but for me you can't beat a Labrador Retriever. They are the most loyal, faithful, friendly dogs ever. Not a mean bone in their body and they are great with kids. We've had males and females with no complaints with either of them. The last one we had was a female and she was the best. When our son was born she would lay right by him all the time and when he started to crawl he would crawl on her and she would just look at him and lay there. They are also easy to train. We taught her to throw her ball and you would be eating dinner at the table and all of a sudden a tennis ball would go bouncing across the table. God I miss her so much, she was by my side for 15 years before we had to have her put down.

I love all dogs......and when I got my first dog, Smokey, a Flat Coated Retriever......I thought she was the perfect dog.
                    Now I have a terrier(the RCA dog)
                    ....
                    A beagle/lab mix...
...and a Border Collie/Bernese Mountain Dog mix and they are all perfect(okay...Nickie...the BC/BM mix is nuts...but she is also brilliant!...BC's are really the rocket scientists of the dog world!)....
So the perfect dog is the one you have and love!

Siberian Huskies are attention whores and hair machines so don't get one of those.

I've put pictures in the other thread but mine is a husky (mother) and Lab/BC mix.

She's brilliant, compassionate, and doesn't shed like a husky. I couldn't have asked for a better dog.

                          Re: Dog advice

Ok, for some reason over the last month or so, I've started getting this desire for a dog. I have two kids (girl, 7, and boy, 4) that both have mentioned wanting one, too. Then again, I don't know many kids that have ever NOT wanted a pet. The wife? Yeah, not so much. Even when my folks needed to leave for a couple months so my dad could get a bone marrow transplant, she didn't want to even temporarily take their dog.

Anyway, I've got a few starter questions:
                          - How do I (or how did you) know that this won't be some "it would be cool if..." thing?
Up until recently, I've been a dog "appreciater" but not a dog lover. My wife will laugh at me because I'll occasionally comment on a nice-looking dog. When I visit my parents and sisters, I love petting and playing with their dog(s) but have always kinda felt that "uncle" thing...wind 'em up and then send 'em home. Bottom line, I don't want to get into something that I figure out a few months from now I didn't really want after all.

                          - Any specific breeds that you'd recommend?
I'm a runner and have done everything from a 2-mile fun-run to a full marathon. I like the longer distances but will cut back to 30 minute runs once in a while. I'm not fast at all. My daughter is shy/timid but really loves my parents' dog. My son is a typical rowdy 4-yr-old boy, always climbing on furniture, trees, me. They both love sleeping with my parents' dog. I'd prefer a medium or large dog to join me on my runs but also one that won't get destructively stir-crazy if I can't/don't get a run in.

                          - The big one...how would you sell someone on the idea that isn't all that open to it?
Again, the wife is going to be a HUGE hurdle to overcome. She doesn't mind my parents' dog when we visit them but couldn't really care less if he wasn't there. I don't think that I've ever seen her pet him. She kinda adopts the "not my kid/problem" approach with him. She can also be VERY stubborn once she has her mind made up. I debated using the "dog or another kid" approach but I think I'd just get a long stay at the Sofa Campgrounds if I tried that one...

My advice would be to check with a local rescue group in your area. I'd look for a dog who isn't still in the puppy stage (for your wife's sake). Some of dogs who are in foster homes are already be potty trained, so that's one less thing you would have to worry about. Plus they will probably know if they get along with kids. When we adopted our last dog his "foster mom" brought him to our house for a meet and greet. Everything went well that night so he kept him from them on. If things didn't work out, then I can guarantee that they will take them back because people who foster want what is in the dogs best interest. I'd be sure to share any concerns that you had with the person so that they have a heads up, but I assume this is a fairly standard practice.

Also another benefit of going with a dog that is a little bit older is that they should already be leash trained. If they are, then I've never met a dog that didn't want to take a 30 minute run.

I'm not going to say which breed you should get because I've had all different types of dogs and each one has been awesome in their own way. For your needs I'd pay attention to a) the dogs temperament with kids b) the dog being house trained and c) how well it runs on a leash.

As for you wife first off let me say she has no soul..... I'm kidding.
I actually lived with a girl once that was the same way and once we got a dog she ended up loving him. Maybe you can make some sort of compromise with her picking the dog or something like that. If she doesn't budge then let her know how selfish she is being by not letting you and your kids have a dog... kidding again... well, kind of.

Either way good luck and let us know how everything works out.

This is my dog from my post earlier, I've had people at the dog park ask me if he's vicious..jeez. He looks depressed to me lol. Sweetest thing ever.
Seriously best dog I've ever seen, met/had manners so to speak.. I live in the bush I have recalled him from deer in the middle of the night, huge deal. I had a rottweiler that would chase in knee to waste high snow until he was frothing hated him for that.
As for what dog, just save him from dog jail and he will be the best dog they get what you have done for them. You can see it in their eyes.

His name is "Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez" Or just Tuco.
