So, as it turns out, I'm a full-blown idiot.
I haven't had artichokes in like, fifteen years. Maybe more. I'm not kidding about that. So I got brought home some nice big meal from a party that also had artichokes as a side dish. What do I do? I start eating the leaves, and I sit and go, "Now I think I know why I haven't had them in forever, these are impossible to break down and swallow!" I would chew on one about 200 times before forcing it down with other food and water. I did this for my entire meal tonight, for about 40 minutes.
I figured I had to have been doing something wrong, so I Googled "How to eat an artichoke." Stupid me, I forgot (still don't even recall this is how you ate it) that you tear off the green with your teeth, and you discard the hair-like stuff inside. I was sitting there dealing with a bunch of hair and sharp parts, saying, "No wonder why they can them artichokes."
Everything that I'm reading says things about how they're not poisonous, I guess that's good... but they said your digestive system may give you some trouble. I'm kind of concerned, because I ate the whole artichoke like this.
My life.
