Is there a such thing a 'heart' in sports?

    And if so how much?

I've always thought that there is no such thing and the great players do what they normally do in practice everyday. But obviously alot of people disagree.

Sports are played by human beings. Human beings have emotions, heart, guts, moxy, etc, whatever you want to call it, so yes, there is such a thing as "heart" in sports.

Yes. It can manifest itself in many ways. Hunger, desire. The recent game where Yasiel Puig thought he hit a homer & didn't hustle is one example IMO. It;s human nature to take plays off, but if you have 'heart' you never take a play off. Ever.

I don't know how you could think there isn't "heart." I'm curious as to why you think that. This is no different to me than people who think there is no such thing as "choking" or being "clutch." These guys aren't robots which, no offense, is basically what you are saying when you say heart doesn't exist. They are human beings, they have emotions/feelings. If heart doesn't exist, or "choking" doesn't exist, then they must not have emotions. So then they must be robots. lol

I think he's getting hung up on the terminology. There are plenty of examples of guys with more raw talent not doing anything, and guys with average (for a pro) physical talent excelling for a long time.

"Heart" is not quantifiable, so you'll never get a definitive answer. I equate heart to work ethic and effort. I do believe that's how it exists in a tangible form.

I'm I the only one that finds it funny that a poster named Rocky says there's no heart in sports?

We are about to see a lot of it in the Olympics. I sure see a lot of it in fighting too.

I'll say this, you can certainly tell when a player is giving it his all and has a lot of "heart" and when a player doesn't. That Puig play is a great example of that. When you think of guys like Randy Moss, you think of a guy who, despite being one of the most (if not the most) talented receivers in the history of the NFL, he took a lot of plays off and often just didn't care. On the other hand, if you think of a guy like Jerry Rice, perhaps the greatest receiver the game has ever seen, you don't necessarily think about how much more naturally talented than everyone he was, but how hard he worked, how much passion for the game he had and how hard he played every time he set foot on the field.

In conclusion, I would argue that there is certainly a such thing as "heart" and it certainly plays a big factor. Natural talent isn't everything.

A lot of great answers here and I want to pick up on the "not great talent but sticks around" aspect of it though. There is a LOT of heart displayed by guys who may be too small, doesn't have the measurables but they sure as hell give everything they've got in order to keep playing the game they love. There's also situations where a player can become a cult hero because he shows so much heart and moxy on the playing surface. Hell, just look at the Cult of Biyombo that Toronto recently felt with Bismack Biyombo going from a total scrub to being a guy who could get anything he wants for free in this city because he showed heart and determination.

There are also moments like this story which shows the level of emotion and heart that can be a huge part of a player's life in the game.

Re: Is there a such thing a 'heart' in sports?

This is hard to quantify but if you want to look at heart look at some dual sport athletes. People who don't need to be good nor do they need the money but just want to play something they love.

Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Michael Jordan. None of them had to play an additional sport but wanted to. To me that shows heart.

Take John Elway (Wanting to be truly transparent I am a Broncos fan so my opinion is biased), he wanted to win so bad that he refused to play for the Colts and instead was going to take a minor league assignment after being drafted by the Yankees instead.

That can be interpreted several ways though but to me shows there's more than just talent and money going on in his head.

To me, this is one of the biggest moments that shows athletes having heart. Breaks his leg blocking a shot and still stays out on the ice for 45 seconds to help his team kill a penalty. Obviously playoffs are going to be different from the regular season but he put the team ahead of him and to me that's the definition of heart.

Absolutely what MadMan says. Moments like that are the ones you'll always remember. Like when Byron Leftwich was being carried on by his teammates at after he broke his shin and completed passes. Or any Mickey Ward vs Aturo Gatti fight.

Another example from recent memory that is probably close to being forgotten thanks to the Clippers playoff meltdown against Houston, but Game 7 against the defending champion Spurs he pulled his hamstring in the first quarter, limped to the bench, and sat with his head in his hands crying. He came back in the game in the second, visibly limping, and proceeded to deliver blow after blow to the Spurs culminating in the game winning floater over Tim Duncan where he barely even got off the ground.

And then obviously, who could forget Greg Jennings's broken leg?
