Can something or someone be good or great but also be overrated at the same time? I had a debate about this with a few people and curious what u guys think?

I lean yes. The Godfather is considered great cinema but I didn't care for it. With all the hype fans of the movie sold me, I guess I expected too much from it, so IMO Godfather is overrated but I don't have a problem with it being lumped in as a great movie with other great movies.
Babe Ruth is overrated. He was great in his time but if you put him in todays game with athletes who actually take care of their bodies, there's no way he hits 500 HR's let alone 700.
If you took Ken Griffey Jr and the conditioning he had and put him back in the 1920's, he'd hit 900 HR's.
I guess if you rate things or people on a scale of 1-10, a 9 would have to be considered great, but if a vocal majority tried to convince everyone that a particular thing that is recognised as a 9 by everyone else is a 10, that's overrated.

Hmm, sure. Especially in this day and age. Even great things can seem greater then they are if everyone is hailing it as the best thing since sliced bread when it's simply just a good, useful product or thing.

I can see it in music a lot too. Some bands or artists may be good, but when everyone is on the bandwagon and it's being played every other song on the radio, it becomes tiresome and you start to resent it. Remember Lorde being ALL over radio like 2 years ago? So annoying. Yet I've heard some of those songs again and they're not instant station changers anymore because it's not a continual loop of her music.

Being overrated seems to be more a product of the response to the thing then the actual thing's fault.

I don't consider it hating. On the flip side of that, you can think something or someone is great and still hate it.

I agree here. I'm not a fan of rap music really at all. I'm not really the target audience and I don't relate to it at all.

That being said, I respect the talent some rappers have, and they can be great at what they do. I just don't have to like it.

It may very well be. It (and its underlying premise that there couldn't possibly be a legitimate reason to hate anyone or their actions or think less of them for whatever reason) has absolutely destroyed discourse, rationality, and intelligence both in sports and "real life."
