Think I'm really moving from Boston to San Diego.

This has been a possibility for over a decade now and I'm finally ready to actually try it.

A little background I'm a huge gamer and have loved sports game since NES and all the way through Sega Genesis NBA live and all the 2K Dreamcast games.

I'm a special needs teacher and after seeing most of my friends move away and get married or have kids I've managed to stay single.

I came very close to marrying my ex and moving to England for the foreseeable future but she couldn't handle the distance. That breakup was a year ago December 23rd and this year I was very sad.

I'm hoping to start new in San Diego. Meet and live with a friend I met on Halo 2 we've never met in person but logged many Xbox hours together he's like family. He has a house and a room I can rent at a cheap rate while I get established out there. Who knows maybe I meet a great woman out there as well.

Does anyone have any tips on moving to San Diego as to what to expect?

    Thanks

San Diego is nice but be careful were you move to. There's TONS of hidden bad neighborhoods that look perfect during the day but deadly at night. LA/SDC are gang capitals and not very friendly to outsiders.

The best tip I can offer. lol

Which part are you moving to? That city is so very diverse.

                    I will say this:

There is a group of people that I have played pretty consistently with for the better part of the last decade that, in the right situation, I would absolutely trust that much. That being said those situations don't always work out.

Best of luck to you, I hope this ends up being the right move!

Born and raised in San Diego, 26 years of my life until moving to Denver. There are very affordable places in East County, especially around El Cajon/Santee. Feel free to PM me if you ever have any questions. I have every great taco shop memorized, and the best items each one offers (some are better for burritos, others for rolled tacos, others for quesadillas, etc).

                      Edit

As far as what to expect, it depends on what area you are living in.

There are some very chill areas of San Diego and some very snobby areas of San Diego, and everything in-between.

What area will you be living in?

As far as meeing chicks in San Diego, here is my honest opinion:

There are a lot of women in San Diego (obviously) and that's great, but there's a crapload of dudes too. The competition is pretty fierce. At my best, at my physical and social peak, I still struggled to really hook up with chicks consistently who were outside my circle of friends and their networks. That's just me though.

I was much more successful in my first year or so here in Denver than I had been in the previous 5 years in San Diego. Then I got fat and it didn't matter anymore, but that was my experience at the time

                      EDIT

Also. I see you work in education. So do I, and I also work in SPED (SSN, SIED, and mild/mod)

When I left San Diego it was very very very tough to find teaching jobs. It was a main reason why I left. My best friend was the head football coach, a co-head track coach with me, just beloved by the whole community of that school, and they couldn't get him a job on campus other than long-term sub type stuff for years and years and years. When I left there was such a backlog of people who had already been employed but their position was downsized and they were in queue for any openings that popped up, it was super super super hard for a new person outside looking in to get hired anywhere. You know it is tough when SPED professionals, especially males, can't find work. In other states you will get hired over the phone after a 5 minute conversation if you are a qualified male in SPED.

As a co-head Track coach at my alma-mater for 4 years I never was even offered an interview to be a SPED Para, let alone teacher. There are just too many people already in line ahead of you.

Just be warned. It's tough as hell. The demand is insanely higher than the supply for teaching jobs. I know a few people who had to sub for years before getting a full time gig

Now, if you decide to move to Denver, you can have a SPED job within 24 hours, lol

Thank you so much for responding in a very detailed way. We do work in the same field and now you have me rethinking this. That's unfortunate because I really would like a change of pace. My friend lives in Spring Valley and I would live there for the first year.
