    The OS Higher Learning thread

So anybody out there learning anything new in their free time? Specifically outside of work and/or school? Any fascinating books, documentaries, articles, essays, podcasts, videos, or even courses that have enlightened you recently? Or anything that you're looking to learn but need pointers on?

Of course mind the TOS but I'd imagine there's a line between discussing and recommending material on sensitive topics vs actually trying to persuade people to feel/think a certain way.

Saw the thread title and thought this was a discussion about the movie. That would not end well.

I read a ton on every subject, but for whatever reason I'm drawn to the Napoleonic Wars, fascinating stuff. Really anything between the 1600's right up until the early 20th century fascinates me.

I also like to study technology. I'm blown away that less than 100 years ago we had oxen pulling cannons to the front lines in World War I and the velocity at which technology is going in all walks of life blows my mind.

I'm really into Astronomy. I like watching docs and reading about it. I guess I do consider myself an amateur astronomer. I don't get to do it on practice as much as I would like, but love learning new things.

I took a couple classes in college and now I wish I would have gotten my degree in it. Some colleges offer courses you can take for free, including Harvard. I think I will do that at some point.

Would you guys be interested in starting an OS book club? We would collectively decide on a book each month or maybe two, and discuss what the book was about, what we got out of it, etc.

I've lately been listening to a very in depth podcast that exposes the Mormon Church and goes through the entire history of it. The guy that does the podcast used to be in the church as well. If you're interested i'll give a link to the podcast site.

I watched some sales training videos from tom hopkins. It helps with selling ANYTHING. Really works well.

              Good stuff.

No problem, I wasn't going to steer it in that way. I'll be PMing the link.

Astronomy and photography. It is so weird how things you look at everyday look totally different in a photo. I bought a bridge camera and a tripod. Figured I would practice on that and see how long it holds my interest before I invest in a full blown DSLR. I like it so far. It have 200X zoom on it.

Living in Vermont, tons of wildlife and scenery to take pictures of just from my yard. Being there are no street lights out here, you can see the Milky Way at night on a clear night and entire constellations. Pretty neat seeing the entire thing. Living in cities majority of my life, never ever got to see them, too much light pollution. But out here, you can see Orion and his dog entirely. It is breathe taking to see how huge they are when you get to see the entire thing in the sky.

Meteor showers are awesome to look at out here too. Get to see the different colors of them.

Re: The OS Higher Learning thread

Really interesting thread idea, though I foresee potential issues for anyone whose intellectual interests lie in the humanities, given the TOS guidelines on politics, race, and religion (pretty much all I study!).

I think philosophy, broadly speaking, would be fine to discuss within the TOS guidelines. I just heard a really interesting podcast on effective altruism that was interesting. I'll post a link if it's okay to do that here, but I'm not sure if it is.

I'm also really interested in economic theory, and would love to know more from other interested parties about good books on globalization and global capital. I work in/on the early modern period, during the period of transition from mercantilism to early capitalism, and I'm fascinated by economics, but I don't read much outside of my historical area of specialization on this subject.

Any good recommendations there would be appreciated.

Is the podcast specific to the Mormon Church or does it go through any other areas?

I'm wanting to learn network security so I can broaden my IT resume. I bought a book to prepare for the Network+ exam, but have been to lazy to start.
