When fanhood and residence don't align...

I was born and raised in South Carolina yet I'm not a fan of either of the two major in-state schools' athletic programs. For NCAAFB I'm a Florida State fan and Duke in NCAAM basketball. On the Professional side of things I'm Chicago (NBA) and Carolina (NFL).

What do fellow sports fans think of people like me who are fans of teams in regions in which they're not from and have never lived?

The idea that someone "should" automatically be a fan of teams that are in the same state or even region where they grew up in is crazy to me. There are no rules, people like who they like.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

The way I consider it, it's not like all the players on the team are from the same region as the school is anyway. If players can change regions to play on other teams, why can't your fandom cheer for teams in other regions? Plus, it's entertainment. If you're more entertained and into teams from regions, cheer for them. I say this as a Jaguars fan who grew up in Minnesota and recently moved to Wisconsin

My story, its was around 1997-98, when I first started watching sports as a kid. Who ever won the championship that year became my favorite teams. Bulls and Broncos, and they just stuck with me ever since.

Cool topic, care if I move it to the OS neighborhood so it gets more traction?

I see no problem with rooting for teams from other areas. Every scenario is different. Your parents may be diehard Steeler fans who moved to Texas from Pittsburgh but still raise you a Steeler fan. Nothing wrong with it.

I don't even have a problem with people who root for teams who won championships when they were young with one exception, you stick with them.

I don't care for those who bounce around based on the good team at the time but I think that's a different discussion.

I'm guilty of several of the above scenarios.

Born in Montana, was raised a Broncos fan by my dad and thus am still one today.

He tried to raise me a Yankee fan but I fought the dark side and the A's were on TV a lot and playing as Texas in Bases Loaded (same colors) I became an A's fan.

Wasn't really a hockey fan growing up but was a casual Blackhawks fan for video game purposes but lived in Colorado when the Avalanche moved there so I embraced them.

I became a Florida State college football fan because I liked their unis.

Don't watch basketball much anymore but became a Michigan fan because as a young un I saw them on TV and their uni's were very similar to Montana State (who my dad did radio broadcasts for) and I meshed them together.

Big thing for me though is that I never veered from any of them and every single one of the above teams has had some very bad years.

Same as you. Born in Charlotte, but I'm a fan of Alabama in college sports (Dad's family is from there), Cubs in baseball. I am a Panthers and fair-weather Hornets fan, though. I used to be a UNC fan until I got to college and met a bunch of people from Chapel Hill.. they were almost all huge douches, so now I claim no allegiances to any North Carolina college team except my alma mater (UNC-Asheville).

I have to echo kehlis' comment above. People can/should like whoever they want, but I don't like it when they keep adopting whatever the next dynasty is as their new favorite team.

As for how we all adopt a favorite team to begin with, that's pretty fascinating to see. Regional teams make sense because it's what people grow up around, but when you are young and impressionable any teams that are very popular on TV can have an impact. I assume that most on OS are around the right age to have been impacted by the 1980s Lakers/Celtics, the 1990s Chicago Bulls, the 1980s/1990s Miami/ND/Florida State CFB teams, the 1990s and 2000s Duke bball team, the 1990s Dallas Cowboys, the 1990s to 2000s Yankees, the 2000s to present Patriots, maybe even the 2010s Miami Heat and so on. When someone has Cowboys/Bulls/Notre Dame/Braves as their favorite teams, you can fairly guess they started paying attention to sports in the early 1990s. When it's Heat/SF Giants/Patriots/Bama, you can fairly guess it crystallized for them in the early 2010s.

I can't imagine liking any other team in the major sports than the ones I grew up with in my hometown. Will just seem harder for me where that teams history means nothing to me.

NBA, as much as Raptors history has been a frustrating one, the history built up over the years on some things is something I just can't replace. For example, even if I were to move to San Antonio for example, someone like JYD or Muggsy will still mean more to me growing up a Raptors fan than someone like David Robinson might mean even if I moved to San Antonio and attempted to become a Spurs fan.

Similarly with hockey and baseball too.

NFL though since I don't have a hometown team, I never got to have that natural fan feel over the years so it's not as much of an attachment. Media here forces Buffalo Bills on people because they're the closest team, but that means nothing to me.

People can cheer for whatever team they want, as long as they have a personal reason to cheer.

For me it's pretty traditional for growing up near Chicago, Cubs, Bears, Notre Dame, U. Illinois.

My favourite NBA team is the Utah Jazz due to Deron Williams and Dee Brown getting drafted by them. I was a huge Illini basketball fan around 04-05.

Agree I like Lakers, Packers, SF Giants and SJ Sharks when it comes to the 4 Major sports but with were I live and grown up Kings are the closet team to me when it comes to NBA and bay area teams when it comes to the other 3 Major sports. Lakers I like because Oneal and Kobe are really what got me into NBA in the first place was 11 when they one there first championship together. Yeah like most people I liked Jordan and did watch him but it is really Oneal and Kobe that got me to love the game and while I know a lot of sports stats and such it was really around the time the Lakers won that championship in 2000 that I can really remember watching sports. Before that I don't remember really watching games even though I did. Kings I could never stand don't like there players and fell like there fans always complained a lot and bad sports.

When it comes to the other sports Brett Favre is what got me into NFL all time favorite player so that got me into the packers. NHL I really only watch the Sharks and don't understand like half the rules but I also thought there colors and name was cool and liked Evgeni Nabokov. Baseball I used to watch much more very casual now really only watch come playoff time if the Giants are in it. The problem is right when baseball starts is like right around the time NBA season is getting close to playoff time and things start getting more interesting and so its just hard enough to keep up with playoffs and work heck as I type this I have been trying to get back to being caught up with NBA playoffs since they started and still about 9 games backed up on DVR. But Giants I got into because of Barry Bounds and have not really watched much baseball after he retired.

The notion that someone can only like the teams in their hometown is one of the most ridiculous in a sea of ridiculous sports-related notions.

Growing up in Alaska we had limited access to teams. Had wgn so always watched cubs and Bulls games and Braves games on one of the Turner channels. Loved the Barkley Suns and so happened to be the only team that stuck with me as a kid.

I also followed football teams with bruising running backs like Bettis and Alstott.

It was confusing growing up and being around people who loved teams from all over the country and coming from immigrant parents who are not that into sports so i never understood being loyal to a team. i bounced around being a fan of multiple teams at once for the same sport. It was more following players rather than sticking to a team.

Once I moved to Arizona at 19 I started getting it when I attended Dbacks and Suns games and went with my cousin who was a fan of all the local teams.

It also helped to witness a World Series championship. What a surreal feeling even though i just started following them.

From there decided to stick with the local teams and represent them proudly.

I think most (not all) fans that give other fans a hard time about it do so because the other fan is usually a fan of a rival team. I dont think they are really serious about it because when someone from from anothre region pulls for their team they dont object.
still there are some idiots that think if you dont live right outside the stadium or work for the team or an alumni of a school you shouldnt pull for tht team. like I say, theyre idiots. IMO
