Re: When fanhood and residence don't align...

I grew up in Southern Indiana and everyone automatically thinks that I'm an Indiana fan, but I'm a Louisville fan. I grew up in Jeffersonville, IN which is literally 10 minutes away from Louisville. My Dad was a Louisville fan so naturally I latched on to them.

As for professional baseball, most people think that I would root for the Reds given where I grew up, but I actually root for the Cardinals. Two reasons. 1) While growing up, the Cardinals Triple-A affiliate was in Louisville and I would go to those games often in the summers with my brother, cousin and Grandpa. It was cool to see guys play in Louisville, and then see them a year later playing on TV in the big leagues. Got some really cool autographs because of this. The second and probably biggest reason I'm a Cardinals fan is due to the fact that my Grandpa played in their organization many moons ago. He was obviously a Cardinals fan, so I latched on to them.

As for other sports, I don't live and die with any of the teams. I have teams I like, but if they win or lose, I really don't care.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I run into this same thing as well. I have grown up in NC but my love for NC teams are limited to the Hornets, NC State, and just recently the Panthers.

My dad was born in Miami and when I was growing up, they were pretty good, so I use to watch them often. Also, my dad is a big Dodgers fan as well, so I got that from him too.

I root for all my hometown teams.

If I didn't, I would find it hard or at the very least...more expensive?...to watch someone outside of local viewing area.

I was indoctrinated at a early age to support Syracuse so here I am, for better or worse. My fandom is not nearly as intense for the Buffalo Bills but I will watch all the games and follow them.

I don't have much hope for seeing either of my footballs teams ever win a championship.

I'm from Southeastern VA, we have no teams. People tried to get me into the DC teams but I never felt closer to them than California teams because I'm not from nor do I ever go to DC really. As a kid there's no difference between a 4 hour drive to DC and an 8 hour drive to NY, so I didn't care for proximity. It's cool to see how people pick their teams. My dad's from NY, but also a bandwagon fan, he liked the Yankees, Giants, Bulls, and Duke basketball. I picked the Yankees and Giants, added the Knicks and Rangers for consistency, and then I just don't care for college sports.

Whenever I moved to SC, people kept asking me, so who's your team? Clemson or South Carolina? My response: Texas.

I grew up in Arlington so all my teams are DFW teams. I'm not sure why I'm a SMU fan. I used to like UT when I was younger but I ended up switching sometime in high school.

I moved to San Antonio a little over a year ago yet I can't stand the Spurs, if I had to pick an NBA team it would be Portland but I was born and raised there and have a lot of fond memories back then when players were extremely hands on in the community to the point I actually had lunch with Clyde Drexler back in the day. As far as football is concerned my Dad was a big Niners fan so I followed right behind and have been a Niners fan ever since. On the baseball front the Dodgers AAA team used to come to Portland and it just so happened one year I was able to see Fernando Valenzuela pitch in a rehab game, bought into the "mania" and have been a Dodger fan ever since.

                          Cool topic

I have always been a blue jays fan but remember as a kid just getting into football I was in a sports store and wanted a football hat. I had it narrowed down to a Green Bay hat or a New England hat. I chose the packers hat and that's the day I became a packers fan. That was 25 years ago.

Still can remeber that day too

I was such a bandwagon fan as a kid. I remember following teams based on the Starter jackets my mom would get. Had a Bulls, SF Giants, Magic, Sonics, and Michigan jacket. Between me and brother who was the same size we had a ton of those.

My sports allegiance is scattered with only 1 "local" team.

I live just outside of Charlotte and was a Hornets fan since their start and picked back up supporting them when the Bobcats/Hornets came back.

Other than that, I am a Packers (started liking football before the Panthers), Clemson (not exactly a "local" team, around here UNC/Duke/NCSU dominates the college fan landscape), Indians (went to a lot of AAA Knights games when they were the Indians affiliate and have family in Ohio who used to always send Indians stuff as gifts), and even though I dont follow thwm like I once did the Flyers (started following them in Middle School because a teacher I thought was hot was a fan, helped that Paul Coffey was there at the time too since we share a last name).

I live in Melbourne, Australia and as a youngster with my family followed the North Melbourne Kangaroos who were the perennial losers of Aussie Rules. If the Kangas happened to even win one game in a season we were happy for weeks! I started playing Madden about 10 years ago and needed a team so on a whim I googled who Melbournes Sister Cities were and hey presto Boston popped up. I've been religiously following from very FAR away all the Boston teams ever since then and have been lucky to witness their golden age, which makes a pleasant change from all the years of losing I endured when I was younger! Of all the Boston teams the Red Sox seem to be the most well known and popular down here. I get so many positive comments from people when I wear my Red Sox cap around town.
