Re: More people can dunk or hit a HR?

Given standard MLB field dimensions, so 330' down the line, 375' in the gap, 400' to center.

I think people are underestimating how difficult it is to hit a HR on a BP fastball.

And no, you don't get a week or two to train.. everyone in the world would have to go today and try.

And just for the record, I've done both within the last 2 months

Cricket is an interesting comparison. I think playing that might help, but the intent of the swing between cricket and baseball are very different, so I'm not sure if a cricket player could grab a baseball bat and swing to try to hit HRs

I'm not taking about training. I think if you grabbed the first John Doe you saw and took them to a park, it would take about 5-7 days of full BP sessions to get close to the warning track and another half a week to a week to hit a homer.

Which is faster than it would take them to dunk on a 10 foot goal.

          This is training.

It's certainly easier to learn the mechanics of a swing than training to increase your jumping ability, but that's not the question.

I think the best parallel is who can throw 90 mph vs who can dunk.

It's one of those things you kinda have or you don't.

I would say neither one. I know a ton of tall people that are 6'7 and 6'9 in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine that can't jump at all and can't dunk. Far as home run ? I don't think your average person could do that either. Some would be able to hit a double, a few might hit the wall.

Oh for sure, I'd venture to guess less than 1% of the world population can do either.

Let's brag about how we can dunk, hit a HR, and throw 90!

Re: More people can dunk or hit a HR?

you always hear just hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports
you never hear dunking is anywhere near as difficult.
Randy Johnson had 1 homerun in over 600 ab's but I dont think it would take half as many attempts for him to dunk. and I bet the shear amount of tall (6'8 or taller) people would tilt the dunk as the easier task.

Re: More people can dunk or hit a HR?

I was positive more people could dunk, but I'm doubting it after reading through the thread. Maybe it's because I've got natural athleticism (I believe the kids call it hops) but only a year of baseball experience. Never got a hold of one in BP or otherwise, not even close FWIW, so my vote still goes to less people being able to hit a HR over dunk.

Even the thought of someone swinging with all their might and getting lucky contact, I don't know if it would be enough to drive a ball out for a major league distance HR. Just watching rando's swing a bat would be pretty funny.

Most of us here have athletic experience, and I think we forget that the majority of people aren't that athletic. Having regular people try either would be an exercise in futility IMO.

This thread got me thinking about my world travels, in some parts of the Himalayas and Middle East and other countries the majority of the population is pretty short and most likely couldn't ever dunk without a lot of training and natural gifts. I think most Kyrgyz's that aren't Russian are like 5'5"

The average height of an adult male on Earth is 5'7". Unless you're Spud Webb you are not dunking.

So just about every average and below average height adult male will not be able to dunk.

In the mlb we see guys all different heights that can hit a HR.

We see plenty of NBA players that are 5'7 dunk.. Hell I saw Muggsy Bogues dunk at 5'3

I don't think because Jose Altuve and Dustin Pedroia can hit HRs is a good comparison of the general population. Your average 5'7 male that maybe played HS ball won't be able to hit a HR
