    Re: 2018 Fitness Challenge

Does anybody have any pointers/recommendations for cutting down/out processed & added sugars? I've decided my goal for this year is to start drilling down and eating healthier. With the connections to cancers, alzheimer's, and dementia I figured it's best to start with limiting added sugars.

I don't eat many processed foods, but added sugars are basically in everything. The major things off the bat would be the flavored yogurt and salad dressings as stuff I eat on a regular basis. After that I'm not really sure.

Oikos Triple Zero yogurt claims to have no added sugars or artificial sweeteners (plus 15g protein). I eat one every morning. I am not a paid Dannon shill.

I purchase the 0% fat Chobani Greek Yogurt($4.99 at Walmart) and add stevia or truvia to it, plus add fruit.

        Good protein fruit snack.

I can't get motivated in 2018. I've spent the first month or so of the new year stuck between "I need to lose 10-15 pounds so I am going to eat clean and work out today, and screw it I want a bowl of ice cream or cereal at 9 p.m."

I don't know, I doesn't help that my wife enables me by doing stuff like agreeing to Mexican food on the way home from work. I need her to like start making fun of my weight or call me fatso or something. That or start planning a spring/summer vacation to get me motivated to knock off the nonsense. I love food though. :o

To me - a lot of it just finding different foods that I like just as well and to keep reminding myself that a lot of the foods I used to like or overeat on are incredibly unhealthy or outright bad for me.

Last night we had mexican quinoa casserole and it was actually delicious. So it's not necessarily about sacrificing foods, but about making the necessary adjustments to keep eating the foods you enjoy. Substitutions. Cut back on eating out. Minimize sugar intake. Etc.

              Re: 2018 Fitness Challenge

My biggest issue, and has been for years now, is that I battle depression. I know that sounds like an excuse, but when days are rough, I find myself turning to comfort foods (chips, sweets, ice cream, soda, etc...) I know its bad for me and not helping me in the fight to lose weight and get into shape, but its difficult to resist at those times.

On good days, I do very well. I eat cereal in the morning (Frosted Flakes or Rice Krispies) which isn't probably the best, but then I eat healthy the rest of the day. And I've done a very good job at work of drinking purely water outside of coffee in the morning.

Even the past few mornings, I haven't been able to sleep so I've gotten up and went for short jogs.

So in short, I'm not sure how my weight loss is going to go. I have dropped 6lbs since being committed, but feel as though I could lose substantially more if I could get past the "bad" days.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

For a quick salad dressing try

                Olive Oil
                Balsamic Vinegar
                Dijon Mustard

Quick and not much added sugar

Congrats on the weight loss, CB!

I have never been diagnosed with depression, but have been dealing with panic/anxiety issues for well over a decade, so I think a lot of what we go through is relatable.

A couple of things that may help you that have helped me.

One is that you're going to have a bad day here and there. The key is to not beat yourself up too much over that where it has a spiraling effect and that leads to two, three and four bad days in a row. Two is to celebrate your success. You lost six pounds, which puts you six pounds lighter than you were last week. Three is the number on the scale isn't always as important as the lifestyle changes you're making. There may be weeks where you eat great and exercise like an elite athlete and the scale won't budge. Focus on all the positives that came from that week and not the number and that will help, because if you keep repeating that process, changes will come.

Keep up what you're doing and good luck!

In 2018. I have hit a brick wall. I can’t stop eating and yesterday I ate 5 meals. That’s unlike me. I need to get back in shape. The doctor told me that my meds make me hungry. Should I drink water in between the 3 meals I should eat every day when I feel hungry?

To add to this you can also do fruit, raspberry, strawberry or mango instead of Dijon Mustard for a different taste on a vinaigrette. I would suggest if you use fruit add lemon juice to it. Walden Farms makes a really good Italian Dressing and their vinaigrette are pretty good, cream like dressing are hit or miss and they are Calorie free dressings.

I'm 46 and out of shape but fortunately my energy level is pretty good. I've started out the new year trying to get in better shape, just made this salad with Spring Mix, Cherry tomatoes, Turkey Pepperoni, and chicken breast. Seasoned chicken breast with a little seasoning and cooked in Air Fryer.

Been eating this for lunch during the week at work instead of always going out and its really good.

Hitting the road again; third time in a five-week stretch. Working 12-plus hours a day, finding the time to workout is a challenge. Eating is also tough, but after doing this grind for a while, I've gotten better about the choices I make.

The goal for this week is to run twice and do a couple of 15-min bodyweight circuits.

Exactly the same situation for me. Been on the road a LOT the last few months, and it makes trying to get into an exercise routine tough. It's not a great excuse, but as far as excuses go, it's actually not the worst.

So, while my exercise has gotten worse, I'm controlling what I can, which is my eating. Trying to eat sensibly and it's actually had a positive impact I think. Portion control as well is key for me. Otherwise, I can basically eat as much food as you put in front of me....

Since starting, and despite having "bad" days, I have dropped from 236 LBS down to just under 218 LBS (217.8)

I'm not going to lie, this feels really good. And I haven't really been that committed to a proper routine, as I still eat fast food at times or snack on junk food. But I am walking/jogging and once the weather really warms up where I can do yard work, I expect to lose more.

Feeling good about myself. This is just the beginning, as I need to lose a hell of a lot more to be healthy, but this is a good start considering I'm not the most committed person.
