Found out two weeks before Madden 19 I have carpal tunnel!

So I guess it's time for Madden 19 right? However, I've been having some issues with my hand (numbness while gaming for more than 15 or 20 minutes in my right hand) and got concerned about it so I finally broke down two weeks ago and went to see a specialist. After examining me he had me go get an EMG test to which the results showed moderate to severe carpal tunnel.

He suggested a cortisone shot and, eventually, I will need surgery but since I don't really have many issues that signify permanence right now he said I could wait if I wanted until early next year. In lieu of surgery he offered me a cortisone shot which would decrease inflammation and help with the numbness.

So he gave me the shot on Tuesday and it was not supposed to "work" really for about 1 to 2 weeks but apparently it worked faster than that for me. I was able to play Madden 19 all evening last night and never got one single bit of numbness or tingling in my right hand. Now my left hand I almost started to so I am aware that's probably my next issue. I may need to get a shot in that (and surgery too) but for now I'm very happy with the shots results.

I did have a period last night where I work up and felt some light numbness but it went away quickly but overall I think that shot has worked great so far!!

What a horrible time to have this crop up eh? Hopefully though this shot will get me through it until I can get the surgery.

Has anyone else out there had carpal tunnel and, if so, did surgery work for you??

Years ago and bare in mind im from England so treatment may vary. I had a steriod shot and some physio and it cleared up nicely.

Surgery was on the table as a last resort but thankfully my symptoms subsided.

Good luck mate, it can be a miserable condition so its good to hear you have some positive progress right now.

That's great to hear, yeah the woman who recommended my doctor to me said her surgery went great and other than some mild pain and weakness for a couple of months she has never had any issue with it since and that was 3 years ago.

I am ok with getting the surgery since I trust this surgeon but I too am sort of hoping maybe the shots and some physical therapy/exercises can alleviate it but we'll see.

It’s quite common for gamers to have hand and wrist issues. I game on PS4 and feel the PS controllers are way to small and is causing issues with my left wrists and thumb joints. Taking breaks and exercising between sessions help. This “Doc” has some good exercises for gamers.

I know a guy who has been a poker dealer for 20+ years. He got severe carpal tunnel in both wrists from it. He had the surgery and recovered for what seemed like many months. He said he had to keep his wrist in a cast straight up for a week. He is back working now and says his wrists feel a lot better. No more pain. He's got some pretty big scars on his wrist from the surgery.

Odogg....do you work in some field that you stress your hands and wrists a lot or is this strictly from gaming? Just curious as you didn't mention any work related problems.

I am a telecommunications engineer so throughout an 8 hour work day I type and use the mouse sporadically. I'm not typing away all day like a novelist or anything though. And I have always used my left hand for the mouse just because earlier in my career I specifically wanted to avoid injuring my "main" hand that I use since I am right handed.

And as I said above, I do have some very, very minor issues starting with my left wrist but the real problem is my right hand and I suppose it is because I am right handed.

I've had both hands/wrists done. One was endoscopic and the other just 6 weeks ago was an open cut (I had scar tissue from previous injury/surgery).

I waited way too long on my left hand last year because I thought pain I was getting in my arm was because I sleep with my arm under my pillow. Eventually, most of my hand was always numb and in pain and I couldn't open a bottle of water or anything. Rehab took awhile due to the nerve being very pinched and visibly bruised (the doc told me). I still have slight numbness in half of my ring finger due to nerve damage but I'm in no pain and full function.

On my right hand... I didn't need rehab. Part of it is because I have a plate in my wrist so I don't need to bend or rotate anything lol. I was all good just 2 weeks later. I just cant lift heavy stuff for a couple more weeks.

I haven't experienced carpal tunnel, per se, but do work a job where I am constantly typing, and using a mouse. I notice at the end of days that my thumb joint is sore, probably from consistently hammering the spacebar :-)

I'm sure age and repetitive stress have to do with it as well. I'm 36 and have been using a computer and playing games since I was 6. Not sure if you are similar age, but I have to imagine there will be a lot of us from this generation that use their fingers and thumbs for a living.

So which do you recommend more, the endoscopic or the traditional surgery?

Oh and I should have said, I am 48 years old and have been using a computer for 30 years. I do take frequent breaks and use ergonomic work areas and equipment when possible.

Something I'm extremely bad at! Breaks and knowing what to use from an ergonomic perspective. Any tips you can share?

haha, you know video games haven't just been a hobby, they are the reason I got into computers, to game back in the day you had to be a pc gamer, it was a long time before the consoles got on the same relative footing as the PC...

so I owe gaming my livelihood as well, would have never been in engineering if I hadn't first gone into the pc arena!

gamer until they pry the controller from my cold, dead hands..and with carpal it may actually just end up being my cold, numbed hands, LOL
