Off-Topic 2019
For the people here who are either going back to school or have kids that are.
Am I not allowed to wish people a happy whatever the occasion may be?
I dont celebrate 4th of July, but I'm sure I've wished people a happy Independence Day in previous years. At least in the back to school case, it was a day which did apply to me for 2 decades straight.
Just saying I’ve never heard anyone ever say “Happy Back to School Day!” because no one is happy to go back when you’ve been on summer vacation for the last 2-3 months, lol.
4th of July example isn’t a good one because that’s an actual holiday and most people#RespectTheCultureComment

Parents are happy for back to school. And I'm sure people on here are more likely to be parents than kids.Comment

re: Off-Topic
Hearing "back to school" was always a punch to the gut for me as a kid. And all those ads for clothes and school supplies were just plain annoying.
Now I actually really like this time of year, even when I am taking college courses, because it means you can go out in the middle of the day and not have kids everywhere.Comment

re: Off-Topic
That's something I thought of the other day since we have neighbors our age and they some little kids running around nearing pre-/grade school age.
I feel like once your kids go back to school that's pretty much it for Summer and all those care-free memories. Like, sure, you're an adult working, but just the knowledge of your kids being kids and it being Summer time, it has to give you some kind of nostalgic rush and high for Summer. Putting those kids back on the bus has to be a bit of a bummer for them, too.

Are parents really happy, though?

The average parent is likely happy. Especially the working ones. What do those kids do for the summer? Stay at grandparents house or go to camp or something?
I know people who are teachers and the parents often come at the last possible minute they can to pick up their kids. And when the school is on breaks, some parents were even like "what am I supposed to do with them now?".
Theres some cases where parents basically just expect the schools to do all the parenting work lol.
But the average parent I'd imagine is happy to have their kid out of the house doing something constructive and obviously getting an education. Better than being home or just going to friends houses all summer.
On other hand, I'm sure theres some parents who hate it. Especially if you've just spent 24/7 for past few months with their kid(s). The worst is obviously first day overall, as in preschool or kindergarten. That's obviously the hardest day to ever drop off your kid.Comment

re: Off-Topic
I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old. The 6 year old has to be at school well after I'm gone to work and picked up about an hour before I could get there in the afternoon.
If the school decides to have some random holiday that the average working person doesn't get you're screwed or scrambling to find help.
If the daycare closes for "teacher training" on some random Wednesday in September you're screwed and scrambling to find help.
If there's inclement weather you're scrambling to find help.
During the summer we pay $450/mo. for a summer program at a camp and I can't wait for next year when we pull our youngest from daycare to send him to a free preschool at my wife's work. I'm looking forward to getting that $400/mo. back too.
Luckily we have the $$ for summer programs, both have jobs that understand life and the need to sometimes leave early, and have some great help from grandparents. My wife has had to turn down better job offers simply because she's in a job that has hours that support our schedule. It's not just the ability to be a parent that people need to think about when having kids. There's a lot of other logistical things to navigate and school is one of them. If I didn't play sports in school and have practice after school a lot of days I'm not sure what my parents would have done because they were in a similar boat.Last edited by AUChase; 09-03-2019, 04:08 PM.Comment

College schedules is something I miss(what I dont miss are the group projects. Everyone has a diff school and work schedule so you could never meet up, and people wanted to do work until 2am). I dreaded the 8am classes, but it meant the class was over by 11 and at times that was my entire school day lol. Other times I might have had a class from 8-11, get to go home for lunch, and come back for a 1-4 class.
Funny enough, for my final semester in college, I basically phoned it in. Ironically, it was my 2nd best semester ever in terms of grades(and I made honours list)Last edited by Majingir; 09-03-2019, 04:26 PM.Comment

re: Off-Topic
Yeah once my boy reaches regular school age in a few years, I’m not sure how it’s going to work out as far as the hours after school lets out (3 or so) but before we get home from work (5 or so) and all summer. After school care, camp, and an assist from grandparents.
But not paying $1000/month for baby college aka daycare is enticing too...NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

My favorite application and most of my appreciation for math is because of music. Math is pretty cool.
