Re: Your first internet experience, and other nostalgia-induced conversations.

My dad had the internet at work a few years before we got it at home, so that was my first experience with it. This was '95 - '97 ish. I would make requests for him to print me off player stat sheets from NBA.com, which he would. Sometimes I went in with him on the weekends and surfed Netscape. The idea of being able to look at a player's stats and bio on demand without having his trading card was amazing to me.

As slow as dial-up was in retrospect, I love that connecting the modem took long enough that you wouldn't just mindlessly go on the internet constantly, like we do with our phones today. I can't help but wonder what instant, seamless online access does to our memory and planning skills.

14.4 modem here, my dad had internet and he had "every other weekend" custody. Mom didn't have internet. Always felt kinda bad that every other weekend was about having AOL instead of enjoying time with Dad. Not that I didn't enjoy time with Dad, but wow, internet!

We did play NBA Jam TE together on the computer, unlocking all the special characters, so that's a fun memory

But as far as first internet memory goes. I have a goofy one, when we first got AOL (also, to interrupt myself, Encarta 95 was amazing, I watched the Maradona hand of god goal like 100 times), my first instinct was to jump right into sports chat rooms, and I had some kinda take about UNC quarterback Oscar Davenport, called him Oscar Robinson, was politely double corrected about his name and who I likely confused him with.

True story. The internet was once polite.

When my elementary class got to play on an Apple computer in the early 90s, it was like heaven.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

Those old giant coloured Macintosh computers were so much fun.

Me and my friends were ahead of the times. We weren't allowed talking during our computer lab times, so we texted each other using online games (I think Neopets or something else).

We didnt have email or anything back then, but an online game where you can chat with others, we took advantage of that. Need help on a homework question but not allowed talking in class? Just message someone.

And played Math Circus a lot. I remember I used to be the only person in my class who knew how to use a computer (this was probably in kindergarten), so I was allowed to use it and just played math circus all the time.

I cant even remember the year anymore, but mine was Ddial. I wasn't there when it first came to light, but damn close. It would have been before I graduated high school and I used a Commodore 64 to access it. I was trying to remember the year so I looked up Ddial on Wikipedia and found the article to be quite fascinating as I never realized it originated where I lived.

I knew all the players in the history section personally except for Bill who was mentioned first in the history section. Was at each of their houses at some point before the end of high school.

That is my introduction to the pre-internet. I remember 16k modems too.
