Re: This or That: Target or Walmart

I actually got into an argument with a Safeway manager once over self checkout lines. The one by my old house was a really nice Safeway. Good selection and fairly decent prices but the lines were SOOOOOO long after they removed the self checkout lines. Didn't matter what time of day, you could go in and try to grab something quick but you had to wait in 3 lines that would always be 5-6 people deep.

They had self checkout lines but took them out so I asked the manager why they would do that and she said some slick ish like "they steal people's jobs...". I'm usually a very polite person but when met with attitude I'll give it right back so I said "well with these lines yall always have it looks like you skipped the rehiring part". She didn't like that but the last time I went in there those self checkout lines were back in there lol.Comment

Someone should get Safeway corporate on the line ASAP to fill them in on this shocking fact. Oh right self-checkout exists literally just to save on labor costs.Comment

Re: This or That: Target or Walmart

I had a friend that used to be a Walmarts manager and I was talking with him about another Walmarts I routinely visited removing their self-checkout, I asked him why they'd do that, he said something about theft is easier where self-checkout lines are. that store eventually put the self-checkout back in about a year later. so I figured it cost less with people stealing than it does to pay people to run a cashierI actually got into an argument with a Safeway manager once over self checkout lines. Re: This or That: Target or Walmart

It does cost less, but also Walmart always had an employee retention problem. Their workers either quit after a month or 3 months or they end up being fired for constantly calling off or coming to work late. So now they decided it was not only cheaper but more reliable to have basically the entire front end to be self check out. Machines don't call off, arrive late or get sick. Hell Walmart even have automated robot floor cleaners. Some even have automated robot self stockers.

I think ultimately, Walmart and all retail stores really is going the route of the Amazon store. All automated. I remember 15 years ago, Walmart use to have 6 to 10 workers per a department. Now they have 1 worker covering 3 to 5 departments. A good chunk of Walmart workers in the store are now assigned to OGP for people grocery orders.Comment
