Re: This or That: Planes or Trains
So this is an interesting one for me.
I am deathly afraid of flying. I have flown many times though. But I have a very large interest in aviation. I enjoy watching YouTube videos of flights. Especially in-cockpit views. I also play flight sims.
So with that being said, I had to pick trains. I've only been on one train and it was an Amtrak to Chicago from Cleveland. The way there was brutal. Super slow speeds and a ton of stops. Took eight hours to get there. The way back was much faster though. I've been told the way I got there is very rare and the way back is basically how it normally is. I would do it again before I would fly if I had the choice.
My sister lives in Austin, Texas and want's me to fly there and stay with them for like a week, but I'm too big of a baby to get on a plane that she is willing to pay for.
She lives in a ridiculous house with an inground pool and hot tub. It would be perfect to go down for a week in the winter. I'd have my own room and could bring my PS5 or something because there is a 4K TV in the room. I just need to bite the bullet and do it. -

Trains. I've flown all over the US, but took a train from Portland to Seattle on a trip up to the PNW. We paid like $55 total for the upgraded seats/cabin and had 10x the space of a plane. You could more easily walk around. There was literally no security so getting on wasn't a hassle. I didn't use it, but I bet the bathroom wasn't a tiny closet.
If you fly even just 3-4 times a year get TSA-pre. It's so much more convenient not having to take your shoes off, or take as much stuff out of your bag. Pre-covid my wife an I would get to the airport like an hour before our flight vs 2-3 since security never takes more than 5 minutes.Last edited by SuperBowlNachos; 07-12-2021, 11:37 AM.Comment

Re: This or That: Planes or Trains
Sea-Tac has ruined flying for me.
Typical of everything in the Seattle-area. No logical planning or forward thinking whatsoever. Just a complete sheet whole.
Thankfully, we have done all the international travel we care to do at this point. Bought an RV, we climb in and drive away. Best money I've spent in decades. You want free speech?

Re: This or That: Planes or Trains
Because of my history of ear problems and the fact that my eustachian tubes (tubes that connect the middle ear to the back of the pharynx and regulate air pressure in the middle ear) don't work properly, my doctor had advised me against flying as I'm at increased risk of suffering further damage to my hearing from the pressure changes associated with ascent/descent so it's trains for me by default. Taken a number of trains trips including to/from Disney World twice and they're alright if a bit bumpy.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII

Re: This or That: Planes or Trains
Of these 2, I'd choose train...depending on what kind we're talking about.
If it's big city train during rush hour, no way. Done that enough times pre pandemic where I dread the daily "fight" to get on or off the train because of how packed it is. Saying "excuse me" doesn't work.
If it's a train where theres a limit on it and everyone is guaranteed a seat and your cabin is just you and whoever else you booked with, I'd take a train.Comment

Re: This or That: Planes or Trains
Due to the change of pressure my ears get "clogged" or whatever and I hate that feeling, it goes away like 30 minutes after I get acclimated to the place I'm arriving but I dread it. Depending on the cost and additional time I would be willing to be inconvenienced just to avoid that feeling in my ears.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

Re: This or That: Planes or Trains
Flying all day. Get there faster and you can obviously reach way more places.
Now if the US ever makes a bullet train like Japan I would reconsider. It’s more about what’s the most efficient way to get one place.

You can look up how divers get rid of pressure in their ears. You can hold your nose and close your mouth and blow air threw your ears. It’ll pop good. When doing that you can pull on your ear lobe with the other hand to help give your ear more space.
