What's the preferred way for your favorite sports team to lose?

I saw this on another forum and thought it was an excellent question to ask you guys

Whether you follow professional, college, or youth sports, what is your preferred way to lose?

Blowout- Whether the other team is better, your team just isn't getting "bounces", you're just blown out and there's no doubt about the outcome.

Can't score at the end- everything is setup for last second heroics, but the team can't pull it off.

Can't stop the other team at the end- other team scores on a "last second" play and your certain victory changes to defeat in a heartbeat

Sorry, no "other" in this case
I mean all of these options are crappy but if I HAD to choose, it would be a blowout, because if you can't score on the last possession or you can't stop the other team on their last possession, that's heartbreaking as a fan. At least in a blowout, you know all is lost and can watch another game.

I'd rather lose a game where I can shut it off halfway through and go about other things.

Blowouts are boring and the team not being able to score is frustrating. At least a last-second loss is still exciting.

        Blowout*, for sure.

Twelve years later, I still think about those fades to Crabtree. Why not give Gore a chance? What would have happened if Harbaugh hadn't called timeout just before that designed run with Kap?

In 12 years, I'm sure I'll still be thinking about the plays that led up to Mahomes sending the game to OT and then winning it in OT.

So yeah, throw out not being able to score at the end and giving up a score at the end. I think I'd rather just get beat and not second guess plays and calls.

The * though is for a blowout like TCU experienced against Georgia. I don't think I'd want to get beat so bad that people think you're a joke and basically discount everything you did to get there.

Blowout so I can stop watching before the end and go do something else with my time.

I like game variance. I like not knowing what I'm getting going into things.

Ultimately I'd want close games because I want to contend and have a chance to win. Ultimately we invest months into this form of entertainment. It's why I don't prioritize championships only. I'd rather my team contend for 10 years with a chance to get a ring or two and have multiple memorable games, seasons, series, moments, etc than do the Florida Marlins bull**** of winning a ring and then tearing everything down and blowing for a decade + and throwing seasons away before they even start.

There is something freeing about sometimes getting your *** kicked or winning in blowout fashion. A bit less stress. But, when you're losing like that, it's anger and frustration and embarrassment rather than losing close and being sad, relitigating, etc.

I rather see a good game and lose at the last shot. Blowouts are frustrating. If you lose a close game at least the team is fighting and making it competitive rather than seeing the team give up once they get their *** kicked.

As a Toronto sports fan, always choose blowout losses.

The amount of big games this city has lost due to a single goal, run or basket, especially when they were the ones leading by a good margin, is enough to give people PTSD.

if the blowout loss is guaranteed, I'll take that and move on, no stress

but if you give up and your team comes back to make a miracle comeback, that'll sit with you forever

but since that's not an option we don't have to worry about that

                      Mike McCarthy did it best.

Equal parts absolutely no shot whatsoever, chased by 5 Playoff losses on the final play of the game (5 walkoffs.. I mean, how is that even possible?)

.. In all seriousness though, I guess I'd say the 35-17 types.

Not horrid blowouts where you were embarrassed, but not close either. Margin of defeat left no doubt.

It's not really on the list (which I'll choose in a bit), but my preferred way is when I know they at least had the offensive opportunities, even if they squandered them.

In baseball this would be akin to leaving runners on base, in basketball this would be akin to missing the open looks, in football this would be akin to driving downfield despite a turnover (of any kind), and in hockey this would basically be a time of possession thing (or limited PK unit time).

I think among those, I like the last option of the other team beating us in a comeback or what have you. It's heartbreaking, but torture is a part of the sports we love watching and playing. If it's us "beating ourselves" I'm not really loving it in the moment, but for these professional athletes I know that's only a short-term problem and not a long-term one.

This is kind of like also asking whether you'd prefer to have your team always lose the Super Bowl, get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, or never be a contender in the first place. I'd rather get there, man.

                            They never lose!

Had a pretty tough L and subsequent booting from playoff contention last night. Some questionable judgement calls by the refs in multiple games contributed to it. I think the hardest part was being at the absolute peak of excitement and then like a balloon being popped, BANG! All gone.

Preferred way to lose a single game? Last second, and it better be a heroic effort not some rinky dinky 25 yard FG. I want to say damn! They won that one! Instead of “we lost that one.”
