    Off-topic thread closed WHY?

I mean, I see that it was closed because "this thread just poses too much of a problem on a normal basis" (http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2039353745)... what problem? I haven't seen any problems in the off-topic thread. The Madden and 2K forums (for example) seem like much more of a problem to me than the Off-topic thread ever was.

Can we get a better explanation?

Because, honestly, I'm probably going to visit OS a lot less now. There's nothing else here that I really need. Sure, I'll visit once in a while if there's a question I need answered or whatever, but that's it. Are you guys trying to drive away posters or what?

Yeah, they need to focus more on improving other forums due to all the new members than to take away the Off-Topic thread, just my 2 cents.

I was also wondering what got our home closed. The thread was going great and then got slammed shut.

Off Topic was the one thread I really enjoyed reading when I woke up, got to know the guys and it was an escape from the horrible areas (ie Madden) where new guys never really showed up.

Is there any chance it can be re-opened and leave out whatever caused it to get locked in the first place?

I don't recall seeing anything in there recently that was out of line with the rest of the thread. Maybe there was and I missed it.

I'm not too sure what got it closed either. Maybe it was the whole "who's naylin paylin" thing from a couple days ago and there have been times when a mod has to come in and gently remind us to bring the thread back in line but to my mind it never really got TOO out of hand considering it's full of old time regulars and good guys posting in it.

Oh well, c'est le vie OS Off Topic Thread.

I'm sure they have their reasons... just like Mill. said... we used to have a EE forum but that sadly was closed down and an entertainment forum was put up in its place...

If OS can survive the day the EE forum was shut down (that was a lonnnnng day) ... they'll survive and move on from one thread being shut down.

              Spam
Purposely spamming a message board with senseless, vacuous, or empty messages to increase your post count is highly frowned upon! This includes such things as party posts, chain letters and two-word "I agree" or "me too" responses. Continually posting the same topic on a particular board, and posting the same question across several boards is also considered spamming, and is a violation of this TOS.
That was the reason given when the "What the hell is on your mind?" thread got shut down. But also in the TOS is this:

              Off-Topic Posts
There are many forums available for posts, each with a specific focus. Off-topic posts will be moved to the proper forum, and further action may be taken against repeat offenders.
So it is pretty confusing. It seems that the locking of the thread doesn't really go along with the TOS, which also seems to contradict itself.

It doesn't bother me either way. I just think the people that posted it in regularly want a little clarification.

                Re: Off-topic thread closed WHY?

Although I think something like this should be reserved for PM's, I think a little rally here wouldn't hurt.

Seeing Blaxican8504's post and seeing the "Off Topic Posts" piece from the TOS, I can see a mix up. But I think that if they close down the 09 OS OT thread, they may as well close down the whole OS Neighborhood subforum. Why? Because that whole subforum is off topic stuff!

I think what the 09 OS OT thread did best was limit the amount of off topic threads we saw. So instead of having 10 new threads about random crap, we'd have 10 new posts in the 09 OS OT thread instead. It kept it a bit more organized.

I know that the 09 OS OT thread and the one before it had its share of problems. But for over 1000 pages in the original and over 700 pages in the new one, I think it did a pretty good job of controlling itself. Yeah, there's slip ups (the last one I remember being a feud between JJLinn and jmood), but I don't think they were often enough or serious enough to warrant closing the thread down. Especially now.

Overall, I think the thread did more good then it did harm. By a long shot.

That's my opinion on it. I always respect what the moderators and administrators do here, but I think they were just wrong on this one.

                  Re: Off-topic thread closed WHY?

Let me start with this: The Off Topic thread will not be re-opened.

From the drug talk, to the drunk posts, to the lack of respect shown by some posters, it's a matter of was it worth for us, a SPORTS GAMING website, to deal with. In the end, we decided the answer was no.

Again, please feel free to use your Arena/Blogs for anything that might have gone in this thread. But this is a decision that has been about a month in the making.

And we have been attempting to clean that and the baseball game forums up as well.

But the Madden forums have threads that are closed all the time. So, I'm not really understanding this analogy.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

I'm still ticked about the WTHIOYM thread being closed because of "spam." With no warning at all, just out of the blue was decided the thread was spam. Sigh...

I think it's dumb. These forums are here for the posters to use and enjoy. If it's something the posters obviously enjoy, why not let them have it. Give out infractions or warnings to cut down on whatever you don't want. JMHO...

I believe they (the OS powers that be) cut out what they didn't want by locking the Off-Topic thread. For a G-rated sports-gaming forum, that thread was pushing boundaries to say the least.

That said, I'm disappointed that the thread was locked, but I understand the move fully.
