    Zlib Compression

I know you guys are complaining(prob poor diction) about bandwidth usage.

I also noticed(a long long long time ago) that ubb/infopop supports zlib compression. I have been curious in the past about how if would speed things up if it were enabled.

I know bdoughty said something recently about the server getting overworked but i don't know if he ment memory wise, cpu wise or general IO wise. Enabling zlib would increase the CPU usage a bit but it should also save alot of bandwidth.

CPU cycles are cheap........ this should make your pipe seem 30-50% bigger.

    info and how to

    Re: Zlib Compression

That info was for UBBClassic which is a totaly different board (same company). With UBBthreads you can turn on or off zlib in the admin area. The funniest part is when I brought it up I got a popup for vbulletin (their competitor)

Here is the notation next to the Zlib (on or off box)

Use zlib compression if available (pages will be smaller but it may cause excess server overhead on busy sites)

Right now the server is running from 200 to 300% according to the host (they are refering to the processor). The fix will be the new server which gives us more memory, processor and larger faster HD.

Rick Baker (the guy who made threads) recommened leaving this function off until we get a faster server.

no question it will eat up more CPU doing the compression... once "yall" get the new server I would like to see if things seemed to load any faster.

            Will do...

We tested it awhile back and for some of us it was faster, especially on things like the old "entrance". Steve saw a big difference, yet on my end it was the same.
