Instead of closing every news thread in the OS Neighborhood because a few people cannot act like Adults, can we just Give em an infraction and keep the thread going? The Oil Spill in the Gulf thread is a classic example, a few people act like a jackass but 95% of the thread is civil, no Politics, and is actually on subject.

Why do we have to keep closing down topics that are not only relevant in today's society but are impacting individuals here on OS? There has got to be better way to deal with people that cannot be serious in serious discussions, Instead of using a Saw, why not a scalpel?

This might work if people reported the posts. It doesn't help to check out a thread like that to see multiple insults and infractions on the last two pages and not one report of it. In other words help us police those threads and they won't be closed.

It would be too hard to police. I would like to see threads that got closed get removed too. But that is only my opinion.

Yes, every reported post gets looked at by multiple mods.

It helps to know background on something but we can figure out whats wrong with a post even when someone just reports with no explanation.

Just to add....a lot of times there are topics which have proven to never work out on OS. I like to give a bit of a leash but its never too long before that gets wasted. Consequently, a lot of moderators just quickly nip something in the bud before it gets too out of hand and multiple infractions hand out. It's never fun to sort out a blood bath, and to be perfectly honest, just closing a thread ends up working better for the community. No one wants to litter the place and hit posters with red card after red card.
