    A suggestion about deleting posts

First off, this isn't meant as an attack against the mods or the TOS, I feel the crackdown as more a good than a bad. But I've seen a lot of posts getting deleted, which is something that concerns me.

Recently on a different site (A Colts blog), the guy running it went absolutely insane, and if you disagreed with him in any way, the post was deleted, and he claimed the other was "instigating" or "trolling" when rarely they were in the wrong at all. Ultimately, I left that site.

Don't get me wrong, I am not accusing any of the mods of doing this with posts they've deleted. However, I am firmly against deleting posts. I think if someone is in the wrong, punish them, and leave the offending comment so people can see

    1. That the guy said something deserving of the punishment
    2. What "the line" is on what is allowed, because some members legitimately don't know.

I would personally argue that only spam should be flat out deleted, but that's just my thoughts. The main problem is that many posts I see deleted have no explanation or a very vague explanation like "garbage. (Which can mean varying things)" I think it would be best to at least give a small reason for why the post was deleted. I think this would be better for the site.

Just my random thoughts here. Carry on.

Re: A suggestion about deleting posts

I think for the most part the post they delete are either spam or something that is bad enough that doesnt need to be seen or in some cases like the Madden impression thread its to clean it up to make it look organized.
    MLB: Texas Rangers
    Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
    NCAA: SMU, UTA
    NFL: Dallas Cowboys
    NHL: Dallas Stars
    NBA: Dallas Mavericks

We delete threads and posts that contain material we know that will not die on its own (against the TOS or rule of that thread). Instead, those posts continue to get quoted, derailing the thread which ultimately gets it closed. I know it seems like we delete alot but really its a small %.

It's a thing we do in order to keep a thread open for everyone

I understand it in a sense. I just dislike how many posts will be simply deleted and no reason at all will be given from the deleter. Even a simple "They were trolling", or "Violated (insert part here) of TOS" etc I think would make things much better.

If someone's not giving reasons for deleting posts/threads, they're not doing their job then.

There is one in the "Steve's Forum" front page, and just looking at the first 2 pages of the Madden forum as I type this, there are 4 threads deleted without a given reason on the side.

(Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that they didn't have a reason to delete them, but I think one should be given.)
