I'm going to ask the $64,000 question....

why was the Off-Topic thread locked? I understand that posters violated the TOS, but why was the warning of instant bans put forth if all that was going to be done was lock the entire thread once someone crossed the line?

I'm sorry, but I don't get it. Why the punishment of the community as a whole when its only a handful of posters that are violating the TOS? Why not delete their post, ban the members, and let the discussion carry on?

I don't see how its fair to those who are following the TOS, and who like to use the off-topic thread as a means of talking with fellow members about this, that and the other.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Why allow threads to stay open that serve only to get people warned/banned? We're talking 2 days after we re-open the thread. 2 days, before it was the worse I've ever seen. It was my favorite thread, too

Because the vast majority of posters are abiding by the TOS. If people can't then ban them. If we are stopping threads that would have people warned/banned, then we might as well close the site, because any thread in Madden, NCAA, NBA 2k, MLB the Show, NHL, MLB 2k pose the threat of being open only to have someone be warned/banned.

I agree the thread got out of hand prior, but I don't see the fairness in closing it because a handful of posters violated TOS. Ban them, and let the other posters know you mean business. If it continues to go downhill then close the thread.

I don't think its fair for the posters who were abiding by the TOS and seemingly learned from it being locked, having it closed again at the first sight of trouble. Shouldn't there be more trust in the community as a whole?

I see your point, I do. But I don't see how it's beneficial to OS to ban the 7 or 8 people who got caught up in the moment with their OS friends, then leave the thread open so 7 or 8 different people can get caught up again, and banned.

OS is a sports gaming site, first and foremost. Many things in the OT thread could have their own thread in the neighborhood anyway. I think in terms of what's effective and in the best interest of the site, closing OT is the way to go. It's just my opinion though.

I want to stay out of this but I have an idea.

You guys can ban us from certain sections right? What about when someone says something they shouldnt in OT, they are banned from OS neighborhood for a month or something. It would get the point across without actually banning people and allowing those that follow to still have access.

I had an idea and threw it out there. I really dont care what happens.

That creates a lot of work for the mod staff. There's no way to do that without manually going in and remembering to reinstate people. Also it's contrary to the TOS- it would not be a uniform application of the site's rules.

Fair enough I had no clue the amount of work involved. Thanks.

It's not just the amount of work invovled...it's that it's not fair to people ,say, who only post in Madden to be given instabans, but equally offensive behavior in the neighborhood to be given a timed ban from that forum. Does that make sense?

Is it going to be opened again? I miss being able to go in there and ask a quick question or something. Also, I might catch some heat for this, but a lot of the time a mod is particapating in the discussion that breaks the TOS. I may be wrong, but I've noticed it in the past.

I want to agree with CB, but let's face it, we ****ed up and blew our chance.

Obviously it would be ideal to not have the whole community that was involved in that thread suffer, but at the same time I don't want to see a handful of good posters banned because a joke got out of hand. We've already had enough good posters banned over the last little while.

I also agree with Countryboy. And what happened last night really only started because of 1 post. You could just ban that person and give everyone else who quoted/made inappropriate comments to it warnings. Perhaps this "Cell" that I've read so much about could be brought back.

I agree, I'd much rather have one thread closed (albeit the best one on OS) then see a good group of posters that makes the site worth coming to get banned.

Threads that go off the rail get locked in every section of OS. The OT thread has had plenty of chances.
