what do you have to do to put an avatar up?

Click profile up at the top of the page. Then where it says "Personal Info" and some other garbage, click the Edit link by that. Scroll down and you should be able to see it. It can't be an image from your hard drive though, it must be from a webpage and end in the right formats.

Yeah, it must meat the requirements for the avatar. You'll have it automactically removed if it's too big (not in pixel size but in file size, just like my Kobe Bryant Avatar I had).
