I don't usually do this, but...

Like the subject says, I don't often have things to complain about as far as the way this board is run. Unfortunately, I just have to mention this, and I'll go back to my usual stuff.

This was recently posted in the EE forum by a mod:

    </font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />
Woo hoo this turned political - seems like every current events thread turns political now. So if I see one of those anytime soon, I will lock it too.

    Congrats to all involved!

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">
This is absurd on a few levels. And not even for locking the thread -- I would have locked it when the first negative post was made. I'm talking about the WAY it was locked.

First, the arrogant message. "Congrats to all involved?" We KNOW you hated the Debate forum, so there's no need to shove it in the faces of all involved when you lock a thread that slightly treads into the realm of politics.

Second, the comment about how all current event threads are moving to politics. Well...guess what? It's kind of an election year, and that's the majority of current events that are going on. If it were a year when the biggest political campaign was the re-election of the incumbant dog catcher, this would be different. Besides, almost anything can be twisted into something with a political theme. It's the threads that turn argumentative that should be locked (like I said, the thread in question deserved to be locked), not the threads that have the slight possibility of maybe kinda-sorta becoming vaguely political if one reads between the lines.

Sometimes I get the feeling that the mod in question sits around waiting and then begins salivating at the appearance of something he can bring down the ol' lock on like Zeus's thunderbolt. Oh, I'm sorry...that might have made this a religious post. I'll understand if you lock this.

Re: I don\'t usually do this, but...

    A) You negate your entire argument when you play the martyr role by saying that we will likely lock this thread too.

    B) I don't know if you read the entire thread, but there was already a warning posted about not letting political debate become part of the thread.

    C) Until you've moderated a forum of 20,000, you really don't have any idea how we moderate.

    Thank you for your opinion.

Re: I don\'t usually do this, but...

This forum is moderated by a bunch of smartasses. I'm not sure what else to say.

We occasionally make off-the-cuff comments as we go about our business. I prefer the staff make a comment when locking a thread, in order to make it clear why it was locked. Sometimes, we editorialize.

There are many boards where the mods are faceless ninjas. They edit or delete without comment. OS approaches things differently. It's not to everyone's liking, but you can't please everyone.

Re: I don\'t usually do this, but...

I agree that that thread needed to be locked after some comments about Edward's being a lawyer were made. I, too didn't exactly like the way bdunn editorialized his comment but hey that's the way it goes.

                      I would've preferred a simple:

"reason for lock: thread has become a political debate"

Anywho there's other places for that kind of thing like our very own OS debate club.

We don't live in a perfect world. I am human get over it.

Some of you don't like me and its obvious, most likely b/c how I feel politicaly which is great reason why we don't allow them anymore. I won't lose any sleep.

Would you have prefered I violate the the rules like everyone else, make a political comment, then lock the thread without letting anyone else reply?

We don't allow political talk anymore and I am darn glad, but they still seem to pop up which is frustrating b/c I don't give a dang about reading any of your opinions.
