Because that's a huge client-side processing load. (I believe it's client side.)
Basically, each time the image is displayed in it's smaller size, it needs to be resized, and that slows down the page load.5WG | Facebook | Twitter | fiftytwoplays

No problem, I'll just resize my images with Photoshop.
