That's correct. The reason we don't allow pictures in sigs is that it tends to clutter up the board and makes it difficult to read.

Like, I said, I am sure that the 20 dollars is not just for the avatar and may go toward other things, but just the simple inclusion of not being able to change your avatar unless you donate is what I feel is a little loopy. Avatars are are like the foundation of every forum, at least all the ones I've been to. Adding them as an incentive for donating just seems a bi shady to me, but that's just me; to each his/her own. For the record though, it's not that I am cheap, okay yeah I am cheap. But I don't mind donating to sites that I enjoy and wanna help keep around. But those places don't offer base functionalities as incentives. Like I said before, just to clarify once more, I understand that the avatar stuff is not the reason for donating. But since you guys are on the subject of other perks, what are the other perks to donating to OS besides the whole avatar business?

You do realize that the site does offer close to 650 avatars to choose from at no cost to you, right?

Exactly, I don't think anyone donated simply to get a friggen custom avatar. It's not that big of a deal. For the amount of time I spend on here, getting me through long, boring days at work, I really should be donating more.

yeah, we donate to help out Steve. You are not paying for an avatar. They just happen to let donators have a custom one to say 'thank you' .

Since this was my call back in the day, let me chime in on the donation/avatar business:

We used to allow anyone to have a custom avatar. However, it quickly degenrated into near-porn. We literally had naked women on all fours as avatars ... and the users thinking that was just fine for an all-ages site. As soon as one avatar would push the evnelope, someone else would immediately need to go farter.

It's a nightmare to moderate, both in terms of volume and judgement. Finally, i decided to outlaw custom avatars. Since we were a sports site, we would provide sports team logos, and that's it.

After I made that decision, I then decided that since the donator population was small (and more mature), I would let them have custom avatars. As a way of saying "thanks".

Custom avatars were banned because people didn't use common sense. Allowing donators a custom avatar was a separate decision entirely.
