Essentially if a player is playing well or not. In North America we'd probably say a guy is "hot" or a guy is "cold." A highly rated guy who is not "in form" will play below his usual capability.

Re: New to FIFA, new to Football/soccer. What should I know?

Yesssss just the thread a noob like me needs!!!!!!!!! I'm still trying to learn the controls, so most of my questions will revolve around that.

        OK question time.

        1) Whats the difference between a through ball with triangle (PS4) compared to L2 + Triangle?

        2) How do you make your AI guys go on runs, I see guys doing lob through balls all the time online.

        3) What is the "mark" rating? What is "marking" a man? How do you "mark" a man?

        4) How do you beat the high pressure, double team, defense so many online run?

        5) Speaking of controls, what is some less known controls guys like us should be aware of?

        6) How do you generally pick a formation? Do you base it on the personnel you currently have or do you pick a formation you like then bring in players to fit that style?

        7) Ok lastly, I want to make sure I know the controls.
        L2 + a button does what?
R1 + Shoot is finesse shot, does R1 and the other buttons do anything?
        L1 + does what?

          OK question time.

          1) Whats the difference between a through ball with triangle (PS4) compared to L2 + Triangle?

Is there a L2 + triangle through ball? I know L1+triangle is the chipped through ball.

          2) How do you make your AI guys go on runs, I see guys doing lob through balls all the time online.

Point left stick in direction of player you want to make run and hold L1

          3) What is the "mark" rating? What is "marking" a man? How do you "mark" a man?

Marking refers to covering an opposition player. It's not strictly a shadowing ability, but how rather a combination of how well a defender can track runners off the ball, close down players with the ball, tackle, and manage space to prevent through passes, attacking opportunities. You would mark a man simply by defending him with one of your own players. Think about how man defense in American football involves a managing of a cushion, and when to break on the ball.

          4) How do you beat the high pressure, double team, defense so many online run?

Try to move the ball out wide of their forward pressure quickly, and either keep it out there, or move it back into the midfield. Or, exploit the gaps further down the field with lobbed passes. Don't be afraid to put the ball out of bounds or pass backwards.

          5) Speaking of controls, what is some less known controls guys like us should be aware of?

Fake shot. Shot button and quickly press pass. On PS4 circle and then quickly X.

Body feints. Flick right stick one way, then the other, and then sprint forward when the defender bites. You'll have to learn the type space you need in order to pull this off.

Low drilled pass. Hold R1 press X. Good for getting the ball across the field quickly, and can be good to use in the box to pick out a guy where a ground pas is too slow or aerial pass is to slow or the ground cross too slow to execute.

          6) How do you generally pick a formation? Do you base it on the personnel you currently have or do you pick a formation you like then bring in players to fit that style?

Maximize personnel is a good way to pick formation. IE, you have a lot of good attacking players you pick a formation that gets them on the field. Also depends on what style of football you want to play. You want to play a more defensive style you are going to want a formation with fewer guys forward, and a flatter midfield.

          7) Ok lastly, I want to make sure I know the controls.

          L1 + does what?[/QUOTE]

L2 protects the ball when in possession. Your player will try to keep his body between the ball and the defender when you hold it. You can also tap it to try and fend a guy off while you keep running.

If you hold it while taking a shot I think it does a flare shot. Like if you hold L2 while trying to shoot a cross or rebound your guy will attempt a volley or a bicycle kick.

You can also hold L2 while standing still and tap R1 and your guy will juggle the ball with his feet.

LT+RT will square your player forward and keep the ball in his feet for really, slow, and precise movement.

In addition to finesse shot, R1 is also used as a modifier for the low drilled pass, and some of the higher star tricks.

L1 to initiate run like I detailed already.

L1+circle is a chip shot. Use when goalkeeper is charging you and you don't have space to execute a shot. Will chip the ball over him.

L1+square is an early cross. You can use it to cross the ball into the box from farther out. So instead of a more lateral or curled cross from the flank when paralell to the box. So if the wide side of the field is defended by you have guys breaking toward the front of the net you can cross the ball forward.

L1+triangle is the chipped through ball.

NICE!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a bunch!! Alot of these things I did not know and judging by my terrible knowledge of the controls, I been using L2 + X or Y often thinking that is what made them go on runs. Now I finally know it is L1!!!!!!

I also could not figure out how to go from stopped to juggling ball. It might just be me but I find Fifa the most complicated of the EA sport titles.

I think the controls are all shown and mapped in the controls menu. You can even access it in the pause menu during a game. I agree though about it being most complicated. There is way more stuff than what I said. They should really have a tutorial mode that walks you through every aspect of the control. It doesn't have to be flashy, just stick you on an empty field with the normal gameplay camera you use with a "hold L1 and tap triangle to chip the ball to the dude running towards goal," or "hold R1 and flick the right stick forward twice to do such and such trick," etc...

Also worth investing in for EA Canada since FIFA has exploded in the U.S., and a lot of these new players didn't grow up with the series and its evolving controls.

Do you play mostly online or offline?

Re: New to FIFA, new to Football/soccer. What should I know?

Couple of questions, just picked up this game three days ago and have been playing friendlies (I assume this is FIFA's version of an exhibition) with full manual control (as told to do so by members of this community) and ... wow, I'm terrible at this game

However I find myself having a lot of fun, I just don't know what I'm doing, I don't know any strategy, I don't know what the positions do quite yet, besides the obvious ones like striker and defense men. I guess my first question is in regards to passing and shooting.

With manual control, how much should I "direct" the shot when I go to shoot? I find that when I get a decent shot, apparently I'm "directing" the shot way too much and it almost always goes way wide or clear over the op of the cross bar, is finesse the key here? Or am I just plain doing something wrong? I don't think I'm shooting it too hard, because I'm aware of the power meter and try not to blast the shot when I get the chance, but I still find myself way off the mark. Same with passing, no matter how much I try, I cannot complete crisp passes, I always pass it way ahead or behind the intended target.

The second question is about offside. I get whistled for this a ton and I have no idea what the criteria is for being "offside". I assume it's a little bit like hockey, where the player/puck has to come across the center line before another player can touch it over said line, but when the replay shows me being offside, there's two lines, a yellow line, and a red line, what are the two lines indicating?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but I'm a super noob when it comes to football and I definitely want to learn this game.

The offsides in this game is AWFUL, players just don't go offsides that much in real life. Essentually there has to be a defensive player between you and goal(other than the GK) unless you have the ball or are running to the ball. I get called offsides 3 or 4 times a game no matter what i do, if anyone has a cure I'd love to hear it. As far as the lines you see on replay, the yellow line is farthest back defensive player and the red is where your guy is when the flag goes up.

I would answer your first question but I'm new at manual and am trying to learn myself haha

How is this game offline, CPU VS Human? I have the demo but don't know enough about the game to gauge the AI.

How does the AI compare to PES?
