    Custom Tactics...Explain?

Ok guys, I am looking for some guidance. I understand the game fairly well, understand the use of formations fairly well, but I'm still struggling a bit with Tactics and how to use them in the game...could someone provide some thoughts? A few specific questions to get the ball rolling:
1- I like to play a methodical, passing game, but I like to create chances in a fairly balanced way, i.e. not always from the cross, but rather taking what the defense gives, so I will sometimes try to play a nifty through ball down the middle, or a cross in, or a chipped through ball, or even just wheeling and striking a shot from distance. How do I use tactics to support this?
2- Even more basic, if I set build up play- passing at 20 vs 70, what changes?

    Thanks guys!!!

the higher the value, the quicker the AI looks to get rid of the ball, how aggressive they are with passes, how quick they are to break formation to assist with coverage(ie not going for offside trap but rather tracking down someone making a run)

the lower the value, the safer the team AI will play.

same goes for free-form, meaning you will see your RB making runs up the sideline more often or your CB tracking a CF outwide rather than handing them off to the next defender when they are leaving their area of coverage.

This is a good post. The first question is what formation(s) do you prefer? I play a similar style to what you want to play. 4-3-3 is nice, i build up with short passes in the middle third trying to get the cpu to press. if they press, I play 1-2 passes to break their formation.

If they don't press, I wait in the middle third for my wingers to make a diagonal run to the box to play that killer through ball.

from the 4-4-2 or its variants, I think the key is having someone who can dribble in traffic. your two forwards up front really force the cpu to defend narrow leaving the flanks pretty wide open. however 1-2 passing down the mid-flank areas (just inside the outer box line) will give your forwards space for short runs, you just have to be creative in getting them the ball.

The key is what you see during the build up. If they are pressing, stretch them vertically (goal to goal) and make the defenders come to you. then play those lobbed and through balls when you see the run. If they are being passive and parked on the goal, stretch them horizontally (sideline to sideline) with long direct passes until you can make space in the middle to take shots outside or around the box.

Good stuff! I actually found a helpful video on youtube that walked through each of the tactics sliders, and I got myself set up with a few different ones. I made one that is my default approach, low speed/short passing for build up, then high on the shots slider, medium on crosses, and free-form for chance creation.

Then I created one for protecting a lead, and one for when I am behind late and need to press and try to create chances. Also made one just for a change of pace mid game, which was kind of a tweak to the default "counter attack" tactic.

It's amazing how much impact these tactics have! I played quite a bit this weekend and there were a few games where I was really struggling using my default tactic, but a switch to my modified counter attacking strategy allowed me to create chances! Additionally, I decided to "surprise" Man U with coming out of the gate counter attacking, and I shocked them with 2 early goals! Then switched to my more conservative strategy and held on for a 3-0 win! (this didn't always work, I dropped a rough one to West Ham at home 4-1). either way, these tactics have increased my enjoyment of the game for sure!!!

So you don't change anything when you play a game? It's all default and you adapt?

If you aren't going to add to his question and answers... Why answer with that...
