Re: Um....Manager Advice - Possible HUGE MOVE

In what can only be described as a very painful decision, I have decided to end my FIFA13 career mode. I started with Sporting KC in MLS and 264 games later after my second Allsvenskan League title I have decided that I have had enough. I was also the manager of the Northern Ireland national football team for a spell last season, we didn't qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but we did manage a draw against Germany. Looking back I should have stayed at MLS for an extra season to increase my prestige, I had just won the MLS Cup and was offered the job at IFK Goteborg, I took it almost immediately without thinking and I'm afraid I became mired in an unprestigous league that hindered my ability to be hired on by bigger clubs. I was offered the job at SL Benfica midway through last season, but foolishly turned it down. My team only had one loss in league play last year and three losses overall. I drew twice with LOSC Lille and ManU in the Champions League, so my team was far out reaching its expectations. I couldn't see this team losing a league game during the upcoming season and I was afraid that would get very, very boring. I applied for several jobs including Huddersfield and Wolverhampton, but was turned down and that I'm afraid is what made my decision easier. I guess in the back of my mind I know that no matter where I went I would follow the same plan for building a roster and eventually become too dominant and even managing Liverpool of FC Barca would be a chore rather than a pleasure. I have the difficulty and slider maxed out to a point where I think the game plays as well as it can, challenging and rewarding, but when my team is 4 stars overall and the next best in my league is 2 1/2, it's hard to find that challenge. I keep rambling because I'm hoping I can talk myself out of leaving, but I can't find the passion to stay on. Another large elephant in the room is the stats. As I posted in the forum, I am a stats guy and this game doesn't allow me to take in as much information as I'd like. I want to know who wins the Korean League, if for no other reason that just to know and be able to put it on a spreadsheet, I can't do that unless I play the league outside of my career mode. I haven't been this into a game since...I've never been this into a game, it really drew me in. As an American with a love of baseball, soccer was always something that intrigued me. I remember watching the 1986 World Cup with my friends and asking what was the big deal with soccer, 2 matches later I knew. It's a wonderful, powerful sport and even though I'm not continuing my career now, I will keep it out there so one day I can return if I choose to.

    Farewell.

Re: Um....Manager Advice - Possible HUGE MOVE

and I can't walk away....at least not entirely.

Back when I first got FIFA13, I created my own National Team league where I would play Group/Knockout Tournaments similar to World Cup/UEFA, I had my own rating system and it was really a lot of fun. It was fun up to the point that Spain was 100 times better than any other team and no one really challenged them.

In addition to that I also started a Player/Manager career where I started in Seattle and was loaned to Shamrock Rovers and then to SC Bastia. For some reason I stopped, not sure why I won the Golden Boot with Shamrock and had just made the US National team. I had dreams of playing for 15 seasons and then becoming a manager.

As mentione ad nauseum, my biggest hang-up is the lack of exposure of other leagues/players in this game, BUT BUT BUT if I am a player and doing a bio/write-up of my life as a footballer what does it matter who does what in which league, except for the one I'm in? It doesn't. I still know how wins the big tournaments World Cup, Champions, Euro, etc....that's all that matters. I will have my stats and my team's stats.

I think I'll give this another go......

Bah, I think I'm in the same position here. Started out at Preston, got offered and took the Feyenoord job (big club). After a few seasons I fancied a change but the only job I could get was KAA Gent in Belgium. I took it and its turned out to be a big mistake. I can't even get jobs with teams fighting relegation in the championship despite dominating my league and winning the World Cup with Cameroon!

Hopefully they revamp this in Fifa 15. Its really put a downer on this career that I have loved for the most part.

Yes it is a downer. One issue that I have is the stockpile of players that I was able to build. At the outset I didn't have much of a transfer budget when I moved to Sweden so I spent what I had on free agents. The first one I signed ended up being sold to Arsenal 2 years later for $24mm, he ended up on their 2018 World Cup winning roster. Aside from being really cool to see, I signed him for nothing and sold him for a fortune (a fortune by Allsvenskan standards). That money allowed to then become a player on the transfer market. I stayed away from randomly signing free agents just to sell them, I guess you could call that a 'house rule.' One thing I did was spend more than usual on scouting and they more than came through for me. I ended up with 5-6 starters that came from my youth squad. It's a great problem to have, unfortunately in a video game in can get boring. I average about 4 goals a game last season in league play, which is great, but when you only give up .074 goals a game, it makes for a boring time. I guess I could sim matches to get offers and play more of an owner role, but what's the point of playing FIFA13 if you do that, I could play Football Manager if I wanted to sim.

Ha! I was leaning towards staying when I posted that initially and I'm glad I did. At least I was glad until the season was over and I couldn't get hired on at Wolverhampton or Huddersfield. I had a lot invested in the team and I wanted to see it through, but as the season was closing and I had already clinched the league I started to get less and less excited about scoring goals or clean sheets. That's when I knew there was an issue, truth be told I might have even put the game up for a time even if I'd moved on. I've been playing this game exclusively since December and as with anything too much of one thing isn't good. Who knows, I will probably get back into the soccer mood once the World Cup starts in June and pick up right where I left off, if 2 straight Allsvenskan titles won't get me a better job offer, I'm sure 3 might!

I think you are looking at moving up the wrong way. You need experience, just wait it out a few years till you get the offer you want. I was in the same boat in last years game with Celtic. I was dominating the SPL and consistently getting into CL semi finals with 1 CL championship in 7 seasons. I started to get the offers for the big clubs during season 8. Barcelona and Bayern would offer me every single season after that. I stuck it out with Celtic for 15 seasons before this years game released.

I played all games for the first 5 seasons. After that I only played CL, cup, and old firm games and simmed the rest.

More great advice! This is an interesting point and quite frankly one I never thought of. I have never thought of simming league games in order to progress to the next step. I do sim the Friendly matches each pre-season, but I've played every single match otherwise, even the ones when I've already clinched the league and I am fielding my back-up team to get some players some action, these usually end in lopsided losses. More food for thought.

I do not expect however to go from IFK Goteborg straight to Liverpool or Chelsea or even PSG, but more than anything I am lamenting my decision to turn down SL Benfica last year, because at the very least it would have re-ignited the fire that comes with trying to build a roster that can win league and cup titles. If I go back to Goteborg and I don't sim, chances are I will be able to win most of my league games and spending 20 minutes (I play 8 min. halves) with little/no challenge doesn't seem like anything that I want to do. Maybe I'm just burned out?

Uh oh....the bug is back and it's biting me!

I'd put FIFA away almost two weeks ago as you may have read in the above posts, well ever since yesterday morning I've been itching to start my new season at IFK Goteborg. I tried to start playing NBA2k13 and MLB13TheShow, but the feeling for FIFA came back strong and will probably only get stronger as we get closer to the Champions League final this coming weekend. The problem with NBA, is the same issue I have with football (Madden/NCAA), it's either way too easy or it's impossible - no matter what sliders you use, so NBA has been put away. I got back into my Braves franchise for MLB, that will always be there because baseball is my first love, but soccer is calling my name...again. I'm going to sit on this today at work and make sure that I really want to get back in the game and I'm not just frustrated with the other games, if that's the case then I will try and start tonight. My goal is now, and has been, to get a job at an elite club and start writing up reports. My frustration was that the stats were so limited, but I'm over that now. Here we go again...

Yeh, it turns out this was bang on in the end so cheers for the advice. I was stuck at KAA Gent for about 4 years in the end, unable to get anything, but a few league titles and a Champions League later and I've been tripping over myself with offers from Spurs, Man Utd, Monaco, Schalke, Sevilla..

I still kind of wish you could just sound yourself out for any job, but I'm happy I'm not stuck at Gent anymore.
