CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
Hello all, I just picked up this game, but despite hearing that the CPU doesn't try and dribble the ball into the net, that's all they do. I have even upped shooting in each team's tactics to no avail.
Anyone know a way to increase the CPU's shots?Tags: None -

Bump up the difficulty to legendary, believe me they'll shoot. -
Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
CPU seems to be programmed to not shoot unless it has no one to pass to or the ball is going in the back of the net. I've played hundereds of games, nearly all only world class or legendary the CPU has attempted maybe a dozen shots from 18+ yards out, nearly all with world class players, and most have gone in.
I play on legendary with my own sliders and even the best teams in the world rarely attempt more than 4-5 shots in a game, granted about half of the CPU's shots end up in the back of the net.
I wish there was a shot aggressiveness slider for the CPU. I can't even count the number of times I've mistimed a tackle or gone for an interception and watched in horror as the CPU had a wide open lane to shoot from 10-15 yards out only to be half relieved/half disappointed when they pass it off to a teammate or try to outdribble my entire back line.Comment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
It's in the game though. To borrow their oft used phrase...
PC users can edit their game file to make the CPU shoot. So could EA if they cared about anything other than FUT and having wine and cheese with futbol superstars.
This game isn't made for single player vs. CPU. Which is a shame, because this game has so many versions within itself, offline FUT, default gameplay, slider gameplay, co-op, online FUT, career.
So many ways to play and the one that seems the most neglected is single player vs CPU.
Back on the PS2 when you could put games on your HDD you could edit them just like pc users. I had a sweet playing fifa on ps2 where goal kicks were longer than midfield and weren't always hoofed down the middle by the CPU, the CPU pass accuracy was balanced, the CPU attack was human like, etc
There is a fair and balanced game living inside FIFA 14. It's just that the settings ea have used don't make it so.
I wish gameplay tuners were still a thing. Ea seemed to be really into that for like a week a few years back.resident curmudgeonComment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
Lack of CPU shooting is the single largest downfall in an otherwise great ng FIFA14.
The CPU simply refuses to shoot, instead consistently attempting to dribble into the box, slalom past my brain dead defenders with their little start-stop hesitation dribble move and slot a ball far corner past my keeper attempting a kick save.
I'm also convinced that the CPU's favorite strategy on attack is to lob a ball into my box & wait for a handball to be called on my CB, then convert the PK. I've seen this so many times now it's laughable. I wish I had been tracking the number of times I've given up this type of PK in my Spurs CM. Though about 30 EPL matches I'd guess at least 10 times this has occurred. What hasn't occurred more than 10 times is the CPU shooting from outside the box!
The issue is when the CPU does shoot they are highly likely to score, which means the human player is forced to defend by limiting any chance at the CPU shooting, since they are so damn deadly when they do choose to shoot. This is not how real football works at all.
At one point in the Ghana USA match I believe Ghana had 17 shot attempts, with only 6 on target. Where is that behavior in FIFA? I guarantee if I played as USA vs Ghana on World Class they would have less than 8 total shots, with 87% of them on target. Pat yourself on the back for that game design EA.Comment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
Because of my dynasty pages, I have the statistics from nearly every career mode game I've played in FIFA 14 NG, roughly 120 games or so. I'll go back tonight and compute the averages for shots and shots on target by the CPU, maybe you're on to something....Comment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
I agree one hundred percent. The cpu doesn't shoot much and when they do the rebounds seem to just bounce back to them so they end up getting one or two bursts of multiple shots in a game. In a way this seems realistic but just not attempted enough.
On a side note. Has anyone in here also noticed that short passes will sometimes just go in a different direction than intended? I have been having this problem top to bottom any team and was wondering if it is me or the game. It seems sometimes my crosses have more consistency than my 5-10 meter passes. I have used several slider sets on legendary most of them help. But just not all the way in cutting this down.
Nice to hear others are feeling the same way about certain gameplay mechanics. Overall this game has been tons of fun and really helped me bridge the next gen gap between NHL 14-15.Comment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
Haha, but it's not just a lack of shots. Sometimes I get a good 'statistical' number of shots by the CPU, but when it comes to shots from distance, I've seen maybe 1. Or 2.
It's just very disappointing on all fronts. CPU gets the ball, and tries to skill-dribble into the box and then into the net. There is no randomness to it at all, and this ALSO causes defense to be completely boring and tedious. The excitement of the long shot is nonexistent, which hampers the fun tremendously.
As I type this, Russia just took a shot from distance, it was blocked, and another Russian took a shot. Oh how I wish the CPU was like that...Comment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
Distance shots a lot of times depend on the clubs/players your facing, and although I agree they probably don't happen enough, they do happen, anyway here's the numbers:
Games Played: 110
CPU Shots: 1278 (11.62 per game)
CPU On Target Shots: 670 (6.09 per game)
all in all, the numbers play out very very close to where they should.Comment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
The reason the CPU doesn't shoot is simple. And it's EA's fault.
Stay with me.
EA made this momentum and precision shooting system and they love it.
The problem is the CPU flat out refuses to shoot unless the conditions are all met and the shot is perfection. This is why they shoot one time in a game and score.
I have never seen the CPU shoot off balance, never seen them shoot from crazy angles, never seen them shoot a ball into my defender (something I do often to the CPU) and never seen them shoot from distance. Never seen them run onto a loose ball and one time it. All of this may happen in the game but I just have never seen the CPU do it myself. And I have played a lot of fifa 14 matches.
The CPU spends their time pecking about the pitch looking for the perfect parameters they love so they can unleash a shot. It's just not going to happen.
So they don't shoot.
Ea could fix this in 2 minutes. They just find the line of code that dictates the ai shooting tendency and lower it. I would guess its on say 95. As in 95% of the conditions must be met before pulling the trigger.
Ea just needs to change it to 40.Last edited by BL8001; 06-17-2014, 08:03 PM.resident curmudgeonComment

Re: CPU Shot frequency (ps4)
Hmmm...if the CPU is looking for the perfect shot like I am assuming, then maybe...just maybe, changing the CPU shot error slider to 0 might make them shoot more.
Reasoning that if their shots contain less "error" maybe they would shoot more?
I gotta test this.
I mean the slider should only affect the shot after the boot hits the ball and the problem I am theorizing is occurring in the CPU brain before they think of taking the shot. But hey, in the crazy world of ea, who knows?resident curmudgeonComment

I haven't tried anything but upping CPU Shot Frequency in the custom tactics, but I'm going to give the shot error slider to 0 a shot. Maybe it's different for the next gen versions, but this is the last thing to try before trading it inComment
