Career Modes are normally my lifeblood, and it's still the mode I probably play most in FIFA, but FIFA UT is probably the UT mode I play the most.

This year, FUT improved less than MUT did, but FUT was already well ahead of MUT on most accounts, and it remains the best UT mode in any game I've played.

Since my job involves designing monetization in games, and because I'm a dirty cheater, I spend money in one of my FIFA versions every year. Typically I'll run a fairly unscientific A/B test on myself throughout the year, using money on the Xbox version and spending nothing in PS4 FUT. The goal is to examine how money (or its absence) affects my success and enjoyment.

What I've found consistently is FUT is well-balanced, offering a good mix of rewards and challenge for free players and an easier road to the top if you spend money. Inputs other than money -- time, gameplay skill, auction house skill and experience -- can lead anyone with some combination of those traits to great success.

Experience is the forgotten one, since you can build a pretty sweet squad off of just loyalty packs and EASFC coin boosts.

One pro-tip: if you're thinking of playing FUT this year, log in to the FUT web app NOW. For the next week or so, expect to get a free pack or coins every day. In just 3 days of logging in, I've scored a few thousand coins worth of stuff from just showing up.

1st FUT game on Fifa 15, same old same old. Guys using rapid players in the winger and striker positions, using high pressure, through ball, finesse shot, conquer, repeat.

That should be expected considering people have only played 15 for about 6 hours. Not surprising tactics are going to be similar from 14 right now.

I'm assuming prices will rise on certain guys once the game releases. Unfortunately that isn't the case with everyone. I can't see Depay going for 10k a week after release.

No sliders in FUT.

FUT gameplay is as raw and nasty as it gets.

Because all the difficulty levels are shifted up 1 with the addition of beginner difficulty semi-pro fut is more like last years pro level fut.

The CPU can be ornery. Semi pro tourney last night, the CPU showed little threat to score but sweet lord were they psychotic on defense.

I don't think I took a shot where there weren't 4 players pulling on me or diving at me and the CPU keeper was launching himself all over the goal making highlight saves.

My first round match I was physically assaulted by the CPU with not a single fouled called. It was brutal but I gutted out a 1-0 victory. The next round the CPU comes at me again fangs out and at half they had 4 yellows.
2nd half they collected 3 more including a brutal take down of Soldado in the box. He got up in the cinematic and pushed the defender and I was right there with him, to hell with you CPU you cheaty little minge.

He picked up a leg injury but scored the PK. So now he is out for the rest of the tourney. Basically the CPU is coming at me and wants blood.

So I sold Di Maria for 506k. His price seems to be lowering ever so slightly. I think I saw an auction start at 420k now.

When I was bored waiting for auctions to finish I decided to open a pack. I only pulled Yaya Toure. Fits that CM position easily.

I've got a squad together now with just a few positions to add to be my best.

The team is:

Ivanovic Cahill Mangala Moreno
Toure Matic Barkley
Mirallas Drogba Eriksen


I'm looking to get Hazard on the left, one of the chelsea GKs and of course Diego Costa. If I get those 3 I'll be pretty happy with that squad

It's been my impression so far that better cards are coming out of packs.

I have opened about a dozen and I already have a decent premier league squad. In the 3 rare gold pack I am getting at least 2 rare players at a much higher rate than previous years FUT.

I like this a lot. Last few years it was mostly just rare player or manager contracts in the majority of gold packs.

I gotta say this again.

Semi-pro on FUT is nuts. I have an 80ovr gold team and I am playing werder bremen.

They defend like their hair is on fire. That old legacy you knock the ball away but it goes right to another CPU player rears it's ugly head. The super human keepers. The defenders that warp speed to your player and nick it off your boot during the shooting animation (gotta be one of my most hated things about fifa)

On offense they aren't nearly as insane. So I am having these stalemate matches where I can't get past their maniacal red bull addled defense but I can keep them from putting the ball in my net pretty easily.

Most matches start with them kicking off, playing keep away and getting it down to my end and taking a shot and missing or hitting the post.

Then it's all my attack vs wacko defense to the tune of 14 shots. 6 on goal and they have 1 shot.

Again, holy smokes their D is crazy.

Last night it was 0-0 deep into the 2nd half, they had 0 shots. They booted it deep in my end and the game, and oh yes it did, made my CB have one of those derp moments and he just booted it out for a corner without being harassed.

So of course they cross it in to the top of the box, my D parts like the red sea and Hart comes out of the goal to the PK spot, why? I dunno either. The CPU shoots, it hits one of my defenders thighs and then banks into Harts left glove and goes through slowly.

Its bouncing towards my goal slowly rolling and losing speed. What does Hart do? He turns and watches just like I was doing. it gets closer and closer. Nobody is doing anything on the pitch I start yelling at Hart...
