How to tell a player's potential?

In case it's not totally obvious, I'm fairly new to the series. I played '14 a bit, but never really got into a career. Trying to change that this year.

I'm coming in blind to a team I've never heard of in a league I've never played. I've got a few youngsters on my bench who're sitting around mid- to high-50s. I'd love to be able to tell if they're dead weight, or if the previous manager had them learning from the veterans to reach their true potential.

So... is my only option to pull out my laptop and look up their potentials on a website? Am I missing a screen somewhere? If not, it's a surprising omission. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Ah, okay. That's a bit of a bummer.

Follow-up question: can players exceed their potential? I mean, is it possible to get a schlub of a winger who plays out of his mind, transcends his 70 Potential, and becomes something like an 80? Or even a 75?

Yes players can out perform/never reach their potential.

How does a website like sofifa know these player potentials? Because to my knowledge, FIFA doesn't tell you anywhere in the game what a player's potential is.

Are they PC guys who dig into the game's coding or something to find what FIFA has set Player X's max growth to be?

Another (not so definite) way of identifying young players potential is in career mode look at the player status. If they are 21 or under if it says

"Showing Great Potential" it means they are between 80-85
"Exciting Prospect" means they are between 86-90
"Potential to be Special" means they are 91+

(I may be slightly off in the ranges but I think that is it)

at least last year (haven't gotten far enough along this year but suspect it works the same way) player potential can change if you loan a player out or when you buy a new player you won't see their status again until the next year. When the player returns from loan, or the season after you buy the player, their status could change (meaning the potential went up/down)

Here is my question on potential: What is the point of my scouts if I can find out potentials on sofifa.com? I do use the website and now I don't use my scouts. There are a few positions that I need talent and I almost always go after the same guys (Januzja and Scuffet).

But you still have to pay for your scouts...

Just fire them all then. If you haven't paid for any new ones then you don't have to give them any money for firing them. But the GTN scouts probably gives you guys that you will never would have thought to use.
