    The contain option

I am getting burned on defense constantly by defensive players taking really horrible angles on the ball carrier which usually leaves them open 1 v1 with the GK. I know the contain button helps with defense but sometimes I feel like it's a lazy way to play because it does most of the work for you.

I'm looking for defensive suggestions other than over using the contain button. I have tried the R1 (I think that's what it is) but it usually leaves a player wide open. I will play my defender with the L2 and jockey back and forth with the carrier but he will just keep dribbling over and over without losing the ball.

I'm only giving up about 1 goal a game (but I can't score so I lose 0-1, but that's a different thread) so my D isn't horrible, but I don't want to rely on just holding a single button and have it do the work for me. Should I just suck it up and use it to my advantage?

I defend pretty much like this guy:

        Re: The contain option

I am at my wits end with this game!! I have watched numerous videos on how to play the game and I tend to wonder what skill level these people are playing on. I can't get space at all when I get near the box. Almost every time I take a shot, some player jumps in front of it or tackles me from behind. I just played a game where I was trying to practice the standing tackle. I had 20 tackles in the game and I think 15 of them went straight to another opposing player. I counted one series where 6 straight tackles either went back to the original player or went to his teammate. Last night I had 5 guys surrounding a player with the ball and guess who came out with it? You guessed it. I see players just walk into the penalty box and not even get challenged. I even sniff the chalk on the edge of the box and I am being raped.

So I thought well maybe I need to jump down a level, so I lowered it to semi-pro. I barely won the game 2-1 and the possession was 40 -60. I can't even control the ball on semi-pro!!

My wife told me to stop playing the computer. In seasons I am 0-2-11. I am absolutely horrible at this game and I have been playing it for about 4 years now.

This is more of just a rant and a vent. I am going to keep playing because you can't get better if you don't play, right? lol If anyone would like to get into an online game (PS4) and maybe give me some pointers on where I am screwing up, I would welcome the advice. I've been doing the skill games but for some reason the game plays different when not in the skill games. I have scored world class in advanced shooting but as soon as I get into a game I can't get anything to feel the same.

If you read the whole thing, I thank you for take the time. And thank you for allowing me to vent a bit. Cheers!

            Re: The contain option

I only play offline, so this may only apply to playing against the CPU. The big thing at both ends of the field is patience.

When I play against the CPU, I think bend don't break. Push the CPU towards the sidelines and block the middle. Don't be super aggressive at the ball. Let them have a little possession out wide as long as they aren't in a dangerous position. Wait until the opportunity is right to steal the ball.

Just like the video above, jockey works great. I use it all the time on D. If you sprint on D, the ball carrier is likely going to dribble right around you. Use pace control and just block his forward options and he'll move more wide. Possession stats in my games are usually pretty even, and usually the CPU even has a small advantage, but their possession is away from goal. I tend to not use the teammate contain until the ball is in a dangerous area.

The same thing applies on the attack. Don't just push forward all the time.

The CPU is trying to get you to over-commit and get out of formation. I find that as I get more frustrated, I get more aggressive. That just makes things worse. Don't be afraid to move the ball around and even backwards. I'm just guessing but if you are 40-60 in possession I'm guessing you are too aggressive on the attack. Just like on defense, wait for something to open up. Move the ball around and wait for something to open up. Look for space, even if the player in space is no closer to goal or even behind you.

I play on pro for now and on lower difficulties you should be able to get some opportunities with practice and patience.

The game can get frustrating, but just remember patience.

I am glad I am not the only one having this problem. I was playing seasons last night online and went 1-1-12. I can not seem to stop people from pressuring me, once they get the ball they're consistently near/at the box. Meanwhile, when I get the ball, they intercept it almost immediately or if I do get near the box their defenders slide tackle me or do that thing where you hold Circle and they grab onto your player so then I end up losing the ball again.

I guess I'm just ranting too haha. The game is fun, but damn, the possession battle is frustrating for me. My problems are against humans and it sounded like you were playing against the CPU, though.

One more thing, regarding FUT, how does matchmaking even work? I thought they'd do it based on teams with similar ratings or something, but I am always being put up against teams with much better ratings than mine -- usually against an all gold team -- and its frustrating. Its hard being a 73 rated team going up against an 80+ team.

What kerosene said is absolutely true. Vs. the CPU I use back passes a lot. I also pass sideways many times or try to switch flanks.

Another key for me, esp near the box, is I told up the play using L1. That gives players time to make runs and I can then pick them out with a pass. Don't feel the need to be constantly moving.

Also the L2+R2 dribbling works wonders Vs the CPU to create space.

Re: online. I try every year, but it is always sprint, pressure and lob ball spamming. Gets boring very quickly. Very few people want to play a decent game of footy.

Unfortunately the game promotes these easy one button solutions. They need to make it harder for people to complete these or force manual on them imo.

I have been really trying to work on the pace of the game. I work the ball around but I seem to give it away just over the mid field line. I use the jockey on defense but the AI player will just keep dribbling in circles back and forth. Almost to the point where I just put my controller down because nothing is working. I have been trying the L2+R2 dribbling without much success. I just started using that and I need more work on it. I'm almost 44 years old, so my reaction times aren't what they used to be..lol

I play offline more than online. I pretty much only go online when I get bored of being worked over by the computer. At least on occasion you can plan on a human making a mistake. I played online all the time in Fifa 13 on the Xbox when I was with a UK futbol group, but since I moved back to the states I have not been on with them too much. Plus I switched to the PS4.

                    I appreciate all the comments.

I tried full manual a couple years ago and it was fun. None of my friends that I played against used it so I just kind of fell out of it.

Hehehe, I hear ya! I'm 43. My stick jockey days are over.

Maybe if I ever decide to pay Sony for the privilege of playing online, we can have an old crusties FIFA matchup!!

What difficulty are you playing on?

Don't be afraid to use your back 4. Pass it back, or even throw a lob pass to the opposite side. Don't try to beat the CPU 1 on 1 in midfield a lot. Save that for when you are in a good shooting position. In midfield, the CPU likes to push you to the sidelines and try to outnumber them. Go around them instead of through.

It can be annoying to watch the CPU dribble back and forth or pass back and forth, but if they are far away from goal and you aren't down late - let them. Wait for the right time to take the ball away. Get too aggressive and you chase them and leave a big hole behind you.

Truth. I start out well but then frustration will set in. I will be mad because I blew a couple scoring opportunities or something and try to get too aggressive getting the ball back. I leave huge gaps whenever I feel myself chasing the ball. I notice how huge is it to keep guys in position because the AI is designed to fill in the gaps. So if you move someone out of position, the AI will compensate. I attack too aggressively with one player, CPU moves another player into his position, so I switch again and end up moving TWO players completely out of the play and messing up. Patience is the key.

I have been playing on professional. Earlier today I switched it to semi-pro and it didn't really get much better for me. I did have one good game with Chelsea (I've been using Man U mostly) so I thought I would just see what it's like to use them at a higher difficulty. I switched to world class and played Liverpool to a 1-2 loss. I was playing alot better though using most of the suggestions here.

I also spent about an hour or so in the skill games working on the dribbling drills.
